Help or advice!

My laptop screen went blank a few weeks back and have tried a few fixes I can see on the internet. Things I have tried...

The "take the battery out and push the power button for 60 seconds" trick.
Test for RAM issue by trying each RAM individually.
Looked for loose connections

I have tried to get it working with an external monitor but either I have it wrong or that didn't work. So any ideas or suggestions? I am trying to avoid anything that will cost £50+ to fix since the laptop is a few years old and not worth any more than that.

Doe she machine look like its booting into windows ? Ie hd activity as normal

If not its probably the mobo.

every now and again my wifes laptop screen fades or goes completely black, my fix for this is to give it a good shake lol seems to work. works better when i turn the lappy upside down

Ye the laptop is booting up, sad to say I know that its getting to windows simply from the drive activity. Shall give a little shake a go...not too hopeful that that though!
