Help overclocking E6850 + nForce 650i mobo

I'm currently running a:
E6850 Core2Duo
ABIT Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI
4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800

and I can't seem to overclock it at all.

Does anyone know if nForce 650i motherboards (in particular the Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI) are unable to overclock or is there something different about overclocking with them?

I'm guessing it's not a problem with the CPU, even if it's not a great overclocker, so that leaves the motherboard.

Has anyone managed to overclock on a Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI?

650i boards have a massive amount of FSB holes, just 1MHz can be the difference between a solid overclock and unable to even boot. TBH I'll be suprised if you have much joy at all.
 
have a quick google around as some BIOS releases are better than others. i've got an asus running a 2 year old BIOS as it clocks better than the newer ones.
 
But make sure you watch your temps though!

Don't worry, I'm on the stock cooler :)

All in all this sounds a bit gloomy, which is pretty much what I had expected.
Since the only redeeming feature of this motherboard seems to be the fact it does SLI, can anyone suggest a cheap 775 motherboard I could replace it with that is easier to overclock? 2 PCI-e slots would be nice, but I could probably manage without.

The man speaks the truth. Though if you're using the stock cooler I doubt you'd get much mileage as temps would be your limiting factor. From memory, the FSB holes are towards the lower end. Try some of the FSBs that I did in my thread and see if it gets you anywhere (I remember 1550 working quite well) - you may not have to upgrade the mobo, just the cooler.

I tried the values you suggested in your thread but it wouldn't even post.
The more I look on the internet the more I see reports of the board not clocking well.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, as I'm not very experienced at overclocking.
It seems a shame to leave a E6850 at stock, but I think I might be too much of a noob to overclock on this board :(
 
Try a whole range of FSB's values :-) If it doesn't work, then just get a cheap 2nd hand P35 or p45. You will gain more by going 8x 16x, and overclocking than staying with what you have now.
 
The trouble is when it doesn't work it doesn't just not boot, it doesn't even post, which means constantly resetting the CMOS, which I'm starting to lose patience with.
I'm sure there were some motherboards that had a CMOS reset button on the back I/O. I thought that was a silly idea at the time, now I'm seeing some use for it.
I have to open the case up and fiddle about with a jumper that's hard to reach due to my graphics cards.
 
that the board is clockable. if u move from the auto side of options and set every thing lower it would show if it was the BIOS (wouldn't let u do that) or the memory/CPU not liking the settings...

Seems fair enough, I'll give it a shot.
Should I lower everything (Vcore, etc.) or just the cpu clock speed?
