OK - i have set the multiplier at 40x so now running at 4Ghz... do I need to change voltages at any stage?

running Prime95 with a Gellid Tranquillo and Arctic5 Silver Thermal Paste:

after 10 minutes so far 64-74'c across all 4 cores

right now:
64 - 71 - 69 - 65

max:
66 - 74 - 72 - 69

im amazed that windows responds like nothing is under load... noise is acceptable, think its the GPU fan I can hear (MSI GTX460N OC) but you wouldnt hear it over game sounds...

these temps ok for this scenario?

thanks

I have a Gellid Tranquillo and as I type this I have Prime95 running small FFTs and the temp at the moment is 65C @ 4.5Ghz with CPU-Z showing 1.352 as the core voltage.

I'm surprised at the temps you are getting - I seem to remember getting a max of 55C @ 4Ghz with Vcore set to 1.3v

I havent touched voltages..

why do you think im getting high temp? i dont have any case fan on at moment as we are yet to buy one for the back (there is one there but it is noisey)

and that was with BLEND setting?

im using arctic5 paste - its been sitting in my fridge for 3 years or so... think its dud? - i followed instructions on their website by putting a 1mm line down center of processor

VOLTAGE in CPUZ on idle is (not overclocked) is 1.044v

if i was to go to 4.4Ghz what voltages do i change? i had it at 4.4Ghz last night ion auto and seemed OK

right now ive got it back at 3.3Ghz and its idling at 1.6Ghz and CPUZ says voltage sis 1.044v...

I wonder if its my Arctic5 paste? or the fact I dont have any case fans on? the room is cool (im sitting in t-shirt and can feel chill slightly)

what should I do? i noticed that the 12v looked a little high in BIOS (i think) - 12.2v or so..

offtopic: just had to do system restore after some "SSD Tweaks" slowed it down at welcome screen and shutdown...bah humbug...hehe I enabled TRIM, disabled indexing of files (not windows search, this was already disabled) which made changes to all the files on the drive and disabled write-cache-buffer-flushing on the drive - result? slow shutdown and longer startup time... there other advice was to disable superfetch and prefetch (which I strongly disagree with SSD or not) - i have enabled AHCI mode in regsitry..should i enable it in BIOS? - also the LAN seems to have problems connecting to router, takes ages saying identifying before connecting - waiting with chrome open for 15 secs for it too connect - something not right there, wasnt like that during setup last night, must have installed a driver it doesnt like.

ANYWAY, ontopic

im back at 4Ghz and using prime95 under the small FFTs or whatever it is (no case fans)
voltage in CPU-Z: is 1.056v
core temps (MAX): 62 - 70 - 69 - 65 (after 5 minutes)
core temps (AVG): 62 - 69 - 67 - 63

those that state ONE TEMP do you use max temp, lowest temp or avg?

12v was 12.121

could it be that the HSF lifted after i put it on with paste on? it raised as i was fastening it down on one corner - could the paste not be sitting right?

wots IPA?

Arctic5 instructions for core-5 say to put a 1mm line down center of CPU which us what I did - it may have been little bit thicker than 1mm but not much..

damn! its the bit I hate most... a small pea can be any size lol and I dont think ive got enough left (i have the stuff cum with the gellid) - the gellid is rough to the touch on the bottom - you can feel it has valleys like its rough. it had a clear sticker on saying to remove, It felt sticky from the sticker so I cleaned it with some lens cleaner fluid and water and dried it with a lint free cloth but you could feel it pulling on it if you went horizontally..

TAPE HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION - thats what I used - its years old been sitting in box, has a funny smell to it hehe sort of mouldy alcohol lol

i have re-sit it with Arctic5 paste, it has a made a little bit of difference (5'c).. I put paste in middle and tiniest of paste on either side to make sure of even spread, when i removed the HSF it appear that the paste had squashed over to one side..i think its best manually spreading it, unfortunately I have no Arctic5 left and will have to use the cheap stuff that comes with the Gellid if I re-sit it again and I will spread it out myself

remember i dont have any case fans... do you? do they make much diff? we are ordering two Yate Loons (Front & Back) later on.

ive had Prime95 running for 6 minutes and RealTemp reports temp in tray as 58'c but across all 4 cores as below (when you report one single temp is that from which application? and which core? (must be the hottest one surely?)

Core-i5 @ 4Ghz 1.056v

before
core temps (MAX): 66 - 74 - 72 - 69

after
core temps (MAX): 62 - 69 - 66 - 62

so its about 5'c cooler so far

maybe im putting too much on..?

This is the problem.. a small pea can be any size hehe..
how do you know if its 'too much' when you take it off?

should I try 4.4Ghz on Prime95? the user above says he gets 65'c @ 1.352v - would I have to change the voltage? - i had it on 4.4Ghz last night for a bit and didnt crash (without changin voltages) how do you know when you have to change voltages?

are they silent the Late Yoons?

I have installed the small loud case fan that come with it on the back so that HSF was blowing air to it and the case fan sucked it out through back and its reduced temps by 3'c - so a big one in front and back should make a difference

when I removed the HSF earlier there was a TINY bit of paste over one of the sides but barely

Everyone else seems to have higher voltages even on Auto... and cooler temps :(

what has the memory got to do with it? (spread spectrum)
in the other thread he says he disabled C1E...whats that?
the memory (when I last checked) was 1.5v

I will reboot now into 4.4Ghz with everything on Auto and see what happens

...ok at 4.4Ghz
CPU-Z says Core Voltage is still 1.056
Temps on Prime95 after 5 minutes smallFFT 60'c (in Tray from Real Temp_

MAX TEMPS
62 - 69 - 67 - 63

AVG TEMPS
61 - 68 - 65 - 61

this is with a small 80mm case fan on back going 3200rpm

thanks. cos its really got me why other peoples are at least 10'c cooler than mine...even in idle ive seen the gellid benchmark 19'c when mine is 34'c ...?? something doesnt seem right

are those voltages correct/safe? it stays same 1.056 voltage for 4Ghz or 4.4Ghz and 1.044 on Idle (1.6Ghz) everyone else has 1.1 to 1.3 or so ...will running at 4.4Ghz on 1.056v cause any problems?

can I ask, why disable 'spread spectrum'..? I couldnt find it in BIOS

thanks for all the help :)

edit: just realised we have practically same setup hehe

its my dads setup for his FSX..i have it here until Sunday when we go up to his.

2500k @ 4Ghz (until we get case fans then 4.4)
Gigabyte P67A-D3-B3
Corsair 4Gb XMS3 1.5V
MSI GTX 460 (336 cores / Fermi) @ 725Mhz
XFX Pro 550watt with EasyRail 80+
60Gb Vertex 2E SSD
500Gb Seagate HDD (SATA3)
Win7 x64

im probably gunna try re-sitting the HSF again at some point, this time I will use the Gellid paste and see what happens - if its still the same then thats that!

how is it some people have to change voltages and some dont? is it just down to the Motherboard and PSU combo?

ive looked all over BIOS for 'spread spectrum' ...cant find it

just im struggling to find some quiet ones that my dad can afford, his PC is silent, its on floor right next to me and i cant hear a thing... we'd like to keep it that way.. and he doesnt live locally so its not like we can get something else if not happy as im installing them then i will be leaving his...

I managed to reduce temps on the Gellid by 4-5'c by re-seating it, im gunna try again as im still hitting 69'c (on one core - averages 58'c in the tray icon - realtemp) at 4.4Ghz (1.056v) on Prime95 ... and that was with a noisey 2800rpm 80mm case fan on the back.

could it be all your fans how you get 55max on 4Ghz? and which core is that? RealTemp displays the lowest core temp in tray icon..is this your reading?

I would say that the temps you're getting now at 4.4Ghz are pretty comparable with what I get given you have one 80mm fan. Although my temps are a little lower at 4.5ghz and higher volts, I have more fans running and I'm using IC Diamond paste which seems to be pretty good.

thats what im hoping for (case fans helping)

when you say max of 55'c is that the highest temp on the hottest core? or just what RT reports in tray? (lowest temp)

what do i change in BIOS to adjust core voltage?

DVID
QPI/FTT
SYSTEM AGENT
PCH CORE
CPU PLL

i want to try 1.3v at 4.4Ghz as someone has told me that my current voltages are impossible and mis-reported, HWmonitor reports same voltage as CPU-Z

im being told elsewhere that the voltage must be incorrect as its impossible to run at 4.4Ghz on 1.056v... yet HWmonitor reports same as CPU-Z

also

what do i change in BIOS to change th voltage to 1.3v as a test?

these are the options I have under CPU
DVID
QPI/FTT
SYSTEM AGENT
PCH CORE
CPU PLL

thanks for the help plec i appreciate it

in BIOS main page Vcore is 1.284
there is no obvious setting for Vcore to change it - there is DVID Dynamic Vcore but its ion AUTO and you decrease or increase it in small amounts and default is 0.00
