help overclocking my q9550

hi, been playing with the fox one software on my foxconn mydigitallife ela, and it has aparantly clocked my chip up to a 3ghz, now i know software overclocks are probably a load of crap, but just wondering if this is safer than using a bios overclock, or should i just go for it and try and overclock my rig? i know very basic overclocking as far as increasing the fsb, anything to do with voltages and im screwed, no clue at all, any help would be appreciated
 
Just go for the manual overclock via the BIOS mate.

My Q9550 is currently at 3.8Ghz but that's limited to my ASUS P5K-E P35 board (can't get to that magical 500FSB).

just an update, decided to go for the manual, increased the fsb and set the ratio to 1:2 and have managed 3.1 before i get a bluescreen for unknown hardware error, currently stable at 3.1 from what i can tell, booted up faster than usual anyway lol
 
These are great clockers, you want a decent board to get the most out of them though (ideally a P45 chipset). I've currently got mine sat at 3.4 on a G31 board, lovely and stable. If you've not got one of the later steppings though you'll need a decent cooler on there.
 
aah you see this is where i dont know what im doing, increasing the volts would only further overclock the cpu, but when i do that i get the bsod, does this solve the issue?
 
Sounds like you need to start at the OC'ing thread in this forum with regards to the basics.

In short, the real risk of causing damage when OC'ing is usually in increasing the volts. Q9550's will typically reach around 3.3-3.6Ghz on their stock volts depending on the chip, and higher than that you need to start upping the Vcore.
 
cpuz reports 1.232 v, at the moment im on a standard intel cooler (wc pump fail) and 4gb ddr2 kit i bought which is 800mhz running in dual channel
 
thats what my system is running on now, its been stable for a while now, hasnt kicked up any problems yet,
so im guessing if i get that back to 800 while pushing the fsb up, it will boot?

Q9550's are great clockers.

I run mine at 4.1GHz now on a Abit IP35 Pro p35 mobo. I can boot at 4.2 but vdroop is soo bad at this end and way too close to my fsb limits.

4.1 GHz is around 1.40 volts (bois) but in windows, factoring in vdroop it hovers around 1.31 etc. Intel recommend not to exceed 1.375 volts (off the top of my head).

If you are using all your ram slots you need to up the nortbridge voltage (MCH). I also found that increasing CPU VTT voltage helps a lot to get it prime stable without increasing more core voltage.

You need change the memory ratio to 1:1. This will give you the most headroom.

3.6/3.8 should be quite easy to achieve. Anything above then you will need some very fine tuning of the volts. It took me many evenings of testing/prime runs (around a month) etc to find the magic values for 4.1 stable.

Your stock cooler, case air flow will limit you as well as ideally you want load temps to not exceed 70 degrees. But with the stock cooler, 3.6 should be fine.
