Hi everybody a few days ago i built myself a new rig (first time in like 6 years). Everything has changed now and its confusing me! I have the following setup:-
Intel Q9450 (2.66 Quad Core)
Radeon 4890 XFX
4GB Kingston Ram
Gigabyte Mobo:- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-119-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1050
Corsair 650 PSW
AC7 Freezer CPU cooler
OK so first of all how much would you people estimate these CPU chips goto? I was expecting to acheive around a stable 3.2-3.4 going from what others where saying. Now ive been trying to overclock and here lies the problem... windows refuses to boot at 3.2 and i get constant program crashing at 3.0-3.1. I have tried in my knowledge all the avenues that are usually taken (upping the Vcore) and lowering the memory to 266 but with no effect at all. The chip just doesnt seem to want togo higher =(.
Ok so maybe im missing something important im sticking on the 8X multiplier on the chip and lowering the RAM to 266 first of all (there are several options here such as 200a, 200b, 200c, 200d etc and i have no idea what the differences are?!) when getting to around 3.0 where i start to experience stability issues i up the 'cpu voltage' and have tried several such as 1.25, 1.3 etc. But this doesnt seem to effect the performance at all it just carrys on and the programs crash and then at 3.2 it just doesnt boot! It seems that the voltage isnt helping the problem at all.
When ive lowered the ram to 266(or whatever) and i up the cpu to 3.2 the ram is sitting on exactly 800 which is actually the default setting so i cant see the ram being the issue either.
I dont no maybe im expecting too much but i leave my chip clocked at 2.8.. i cant help but feel that it should be capable of more. I'm no mad overclocker but itd be nice to be able to get the most out of my gear. What im really asking is has anybody got any experience with this bios/mobo and is there something important im overlooking. (i dont think heats an issue as the bios shows it at 30ish).
Thankyou for reading and any help appreciated!!
