Hi everyone,

I have had my current PC build for about 2years now, with some components a bit older. I was running a core2duo on a gigabyte board. Power supply is a Thermaltake 500W. Over the weekend I went to switch the pc off, it closed all programs, logged out of windows and the monitor went off (No signal), but the base remained on.

I left it for about 20min, but still the base remained on with no signal to my monitor. I held the power button in for almost 30sec with no effect. I was then forced to use the master power switch on the power supply. Now whenever I flick the master power back on, the pc automatically comes back on. (But still not getting any signal to monitor, there is also no initial beep and none of the usual sounds while booting.)

I spoke to some people who suggested it might be the motherboard. Following this, I have now invested in a new Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard with an i5 2500K processor and Corsair Vengeance RAM.

I built the system up last night, connected it all up and when I connected the power cable, same thing happened and the CPU error LED on the motherboard stayed on.

Can anyone suggest the problem? Is it the power supply? can this cause the CPU error LED to come on?

Thanks

Hi,

No I have not tried re-seating cpu or re-setting anything as I did not expect to see the same problem with a new mb and cpu. Only common factor between 2 builds are my optical drives, GPU, sound card and power supply.

I will try the options mentioned above. How likely is this to work? I would like my pc back up and running by the weekend, and if I need a new power supply, would like to order it today to receive tomorrow.

Regards

The error light on the MB shows its CPU error.
The case is a Thermaltake Armor JR, and have not ever given any problem. GPU is fairly new (Probably the newest part) and the power supply is probably one of the older parts at 3+ Years. Not sure what the life expectancy are of PSU.
Could parts such as the GPU and soundacard have the effect on the system I am experiencing? All fans spin, drives open up etc. Just it wont switch off when holding the power button. And it automatically starts up as soon as the power is turned on at the back of the PSU.

Sorry, cant remember the exact model code of GPU, but its a double output, about a year old NVidia that uses 2 6-pin power connectors.

Will try removing GPU. Do I need to remove the card from the MB, or can I just dis-connect the power to the GPU?
I am not all the knowledgeable about everything that goes on with pc's. What is the beep from a computer it normally makes when starting up? Normally within the first few seconds. As this is not happening, and has not happened since the problem started.

Ok, so I did everything mentioned above, but no luck, so went out and got a 600W Corsair PSU. Connected it all up, and no more problem. However I now have a new problem. The pc boots up, has that initial beep and goes past the bios. Sees the RAM and then shows a black screen with the windows loading bar at the bottom. After a few seconds A blue screen flashes up for less than 0.5sec and it restarts the whole process.

Is this because I am still using the same hard drives, and have not done a clean install? Is there a easy way I can fix it?

Thanks

Thanks,
Will use a secondary HDD to do clean install and then try to do a fresh instal on main hdd with all data backed up.
Might try safe mode first, so if I can get into windows, I can install the required drivers.
