Help, my pc has died! The problem is that there is very little feedback - no video, no audio. I switch on and all the fans spin up, and the power led on the case lights up, but that's it.

I've tried a different power supply and get the same results, so I don't think it's that. I've removed all expansion cards and am connecting the monitor (which definitely works) to the on-board video - same results. If I take out the memory then I get some beeps - replace the memory and I'm back to no audio.

So basically I'm thinking that it's either the motherboard or the processor. If it was the processor, should I still get something on the screen, and be able to get into the BIOS? Or does a fried processor prevent anything from happening? Oh, I've tried clearing the CMOS as well. I don't have another processor or motherboard to test it with, so I'm looking for help in diagnosing the problem component - what do you reckon?

Its not normally processor, they do die sometimes, but its more likely to be other things. Could be memory, is there any more you could swap in to test. Also make sure that all connections are tight. Could be motherboard too, have you cleared the bios?

id attempt to check the memory first. If you know someone with motherboard that will accept your memory if using DDR2? as you have not listed your specs.

If your memory is working fine then there may be an issue with the motherboard as you have confirmed the psu and other components work.

If the motherboard is faulty then you would need to RMA

OK cheers, I'll try and test the memory - I'd be surprised if it was the memory though, as I have 2x1Gb sticks of DDR2 - surely they wouldn't both just go boom at the same time?

Can anyone tell me - should I see something on the screen and be able to access the BIOS setup if there is a faulty/no CPU installed?

The screen wont show anything if the CPU is faulty. Its not necessarily both sticks of RAM that may be faulty, one that is seriously faulty will stop the system. Its possibly mobo. Do you have another system you can test bits in?

Just a note to say thanks and kudos to those that said to check the memory - it turns out that one of my sticks was dead. My mistake was assuming that no beeps from the motherboard meant that there were no problems with it. At least I don't have to take the pc apart now!
