Hmm, this problem appears to be getting worse now. It only appears to happen when i'm gaming, it'll start to lag and the mouse will jump over the screen for a few seconds then the whole system just locks up. I assumed it might be a loose connection somewhere in my system but everything is in tight, including memory, graphics and all cables.

Additionally, sometimes after the freeze when the PC boots up again it can't detect my primary HDD and asks me to insert the boot disk. Restarting a couple of times normally fixes this. However running Checkdisk identifies no HDD problems

Is my HDD buggered? Is that what's causing the lockups? It's never locked up in windows or just browsing or watching a film. Only appears to happen in games, but doesn't always. For example in the Supreme Commander demo, it can freeze right near the start or else i can finish an entire game without it freezing. Or it can freeze when my girlfriend is playing The Sims 2. I'm totally bemused as to what's causing it, but it appears to have gotten worse as i can no longer play any games without it freezing.

Help Me! :(

Post specs please, specifically the PSU. It could be that the PSU is on the way out, and that when you run 3d games (which push the system and cause it to require more power) that it runs into problems.

A good way to check is to remove all non-essential hardware (floppy drive, DVD, sound card, anything USB) and then try The SIMs etc... see if you get the same problem. Removing this hardware will lower the power draw of your rig, possibly into a safe level.

Athlon 64 3200+
Radeon X800XL
1gb RAM (2x512mb)
2 x 80gb Sata
1x DVD Drive
1x DVD-RW
PSU is 400w iirc.
