Help Picking A Guitar

Looks like I should find a Yamaha Pacificas.... but they are nearly £200 everywhere I look and dont even come with the Amp :(

Squier Strat then, honestly at the end of the day a guitar is a guitar and you want one and an amp for around £100 then go for the Squier, i've had one, all of my mates have had one they are fine to learn on; it's a common misconception on these boards that you need a phat guitar. The best guitarist I know has a £200 Ibanez, its beat to hell and he's unreal; shock horror! he gigs with it as well. Most important thing is that you get somthing with 6 strings and a fretboard so you can start playing, after that it really doesn't matter.

And at exactly 400% of the OP's budget, that's a great tip there :D

Pacifica 112 is the king of the beginner guitars- not just because they work well, but because they're consistent, and you can see them played at all levels, it's just not true that you'll automatically want or need to move on. I've owned and sold a USA Gibson, and USA and Japanese Fenders, but I've kept my Korean Squier, it's always the guitar I've come back to. I'm unconvinced by the 012s I've played, they were pretty dead and uninspiring, though still better made than the usual dross.

Nothing drastically wrong with these Squiers, but the Affinities don't really represent great value IMO and they're pretty inconsistent. And the amps you get in these packs are almost always dreadful. This is where money's best spent at this level IMO, a little more spent on the amp goes a long way. If I was you, I'd be looking to push that budget a little if you can, and buy a used Cube or similiar.

Pacificas are great guitars, I'd highly recommend one for people just starting out playing the guitar. However, I think you'll struggle getting one (even a 012) plus an amp for £100 unless you go for a 2nd hand one. Squiers are OK too, but I prefer the Yamaha (even though I've got a Strat myself). They're both much better than the el cheapo kits you find in supermarkets or high street department stores though.

Agreed. Amps at this level sound like a bee in a tin.

I'd also look at buying a decent second hand guitar, you might be surprised at what you can buy for your budget.

Agreed. I bought a mint condition Pacifica 112 (which had just been professionally set-up, and was later described as playing "like a dream" when I took it for a minor repair the next year) off a well known auction site for £100 a couple of years ago. The 112 is STRONGLY recommended!
