Hi

Iv been out of the PC market for some time.. read im still using a Athlon XP 3200+. Yea its still working, Had a few upgrades to keep it going.

Im looking to get a Q6600 with 8Gb of Ram running Vista 64. Doing too much with DB's and sick and tired with doing over a VPN to our inhouse server. (I work at home a lot) Work is ok with this but is not stuming up the cash.

So im looking for a Motherboard with IDE as well as lots of SATA ports. Not worried about raid. Lots of USB, Not going to go SLI or x fire so not worried. Firewire would be nice. DDR2, Gig lan, overclocking options as i do enjoy the challange. Also a Slot for a 8xPCI-e would be nice as work will be lending me a external SCSI Disk pack to run the DB's off.

Also i know im asking a lot but not looking for it to cost my first born either. Guess i could give an arm though.

Thanks Rob

P35 chipset

Asus P5K-E wifi

45nm support, 6 SATA ports with raid5, 1 IDE, and PCI-E 16, Gig lan, will take up to 8GB of ram, wifi,Firewire, good clocker to boot.

Thanks.. Why a P35 not a X38. Just out of intrest.?

Was looking at the "Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard"

Do all the P35 boards support 8Gb of RAM?
Thanks
Rob

Could I use

OCZ 8GB (4x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz Quad Channel Platinum Low Latency XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P8008GQ)

or would the 1066 ir 1000 mhz memory be better..

Sorry for all the questions but its been some time

as you said, no need for xfire, P35 is all you need and are very very stable.

i would only bother with 800Mhz ram, for what you are doing, also do you relay need 8GB of ram??

as i said, any P35, as you said you want lots of sata ports, how many do you need. 2 for a raid 0, 1 DVD drive, 3 for a 3 drive raid5, thats 6, all you will probably need. unless you have other plans. so just fined the one with the bits you want, OCUK are realy good with the pictures, i don't even look at the spec, i just look at the motherboard.

pick a good name, ASUS, Gigabyte, Abit you will be fine

EDIT: forgot the standard question, will you be overcloking

Yes will end up overclocking it.. Normaly have after a few months. So yea it does need the all options.

8Gb of Ram is definatly needed the DB's are around 60Gb in size so the more in ram the better. I would stick more in if i could but home boards only do 8Gb i wont go into what our SQL server at work has.. I makes me cry (I just need a bit).. And its slow.!!!

Sata ports would be nice as iv got a feeling the SCSI raid box will go back and so will need the extra ports on board for disks.

Im not sure on the "Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R (Socket 775)" as there seams to be a few problems with them. EG not booting when you first get them.

Thanks
Rob

Yes heard the 16Gb thing as well but im not after that yet.. I can wait..

Seams like the Asus P5K ones get good clocks but im not sure i want to spend that much.

personally i like to spend my money on the motherboard, if you don't want to spend 300 quid for a copy of vista and you go OEM, you cant change your motherboard!! i like the P5K-E wifi layout, the 2 PCIex1 slots above the PCIex16 slot is grate. only problem is with big GFX cards covering 2 sata ports

Thanks.

There are a few boards called P5KE

So is this the one you guys are talking about?
"Asus P5K-E WiFi Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard"

Or is there another.. There are a few with DDR3 but they seam to use slots i need for DDR2.

Sorry for all the questions.
