I'm looking for some advice on what would be the best CPU for this.

DFI Nforce 590 SLI board

Cas 3 Crucial RAM

I have not kept up with AMD chips since the early AM3 days.

Cheers.

The board is a REV A1 and I wiil flash it to the latest BIOS.

It will be used for various media work mainly, some encoding and little video editing now and again. I may get a half decent GFX card later down the line and use it for the odd gaming session and some CPU/GPU folding. Just the usual stuff really.

If it's the : LP UT NF590 SLI-M2R/G,
then only one 3 core Phenom I is listed as officially supported by the most recent bios.

But I found this thread :

Which suggests Quad core Phenom 1's and the Phenom II 940 work as well, unoffically, although the multiplier does not seem to be changable.

Research it yourself if you are interested, milage may vary.
