Help playing games over internet

Hello,
I am abit out of touch with this. I remember using gamespy many years ago and playing online agains people. Basically I want to be able to play online against my friend but no one else. Is there a program to let me do this or do I use game spy or punkbuster etc pref a free option:)
 
well my friend has call of duty 5 like me also medal of honour etc but i do not know how to set up and host a private server for just me and my friend or which software would be easist to use

I am running meadl of honour with xfire. I can set up a game ok but my friend cannot find me. When my friend sets up a game and I try to join a game I either have to click the gamespy option or internet servers. of which there are 1800 of them. Where are the xfire servers? how do i find the right server?
