Hi there

Done a new build today, first in a long time and was hoping for no problems. I am getting to a Asus boot screen but the CPU heatsink fan powers up for about 2 seconds and then stops. Bit worrying as I don't want the cpu frying.

Anyone any ideas? as I don't dare go any further!

Also from my corsair PSU do I plug both the 12V+ in at the top of the motherboard. The Asus manual says I should plug the 8 pin but there was a bung in one of the 4 pin parts. Totally confused by this.

/Edit Sorry in advance if I am being stupid, been using a mac for 5 years!

Thanks in advance.

Remove the bung and connect the 8-pin connector or the 2 4-pin connectors.

Mine does that too but when it stops spinning after 2 secs, it comes on again like 3 secs later. Have you waited to see if it starts spinning again?

Hmm bit more googling and I have read (from what I understand) that the fan will only kick in if it needs to?

Anyone had experience with this before, last time I built a system a CPU fan would be running constantly?

I tried waiting about 10 seconds but its not booting into anything as I have nothing installed. Its just sat on the asus screen asking if I want to head to bios.

The boot screen actually says CPU fan error but it does initially spin up. I can enter the bios fine and the CPU temp is at 32-34c.

The processor turns off if it gets too hot, so no worries there. I think its the board refusing to post, perhaps it's shorting on something or you've missed a cable.

The fan itself can be tested by connecting it to the psu, with appropriate cable, and wiring the green to a black on the 24 pin plug. I'm sure the fan is fine though.

^this would have course lead to the fan spinning flat out for a few minutes then the computer turning off. Remounting the cooler isn't the answer here.

No worries peeps, I stopped being a wuss and booted to the Vista disk and the fans spun up. It appears the cooler only kicks in when it needs to?

Fingers crossed I can get through this smoothly, hate this feeling.

/edit thanks by the way.
