I'm about to order parts for a second computer and want to use link it to my existing computer via a wireless network. The main computer will be downstairs, and the second computer will be upstairs. At the moment I'm using PIPEX 2Mb ADSL connection. Can anyone suggest what I need to buy as I haven't any idea what I need to make this happen?

For the computer upstairs, any 802.11g wireless PCI or USB 2.0 adapter will do. Downstairs, you will need to replace your current pipex USB modem with a wireless adsl router. The router will allow any computer connected to it to access the internet at the same time. Wireless routers typically allow you to connect client computers via wireless or via 4 wired ethernet ports. Simply run an ethernet cable from your downstairs PC to one of these LAN ports and you're done.

Most adsl Routers are pretty good these days although everyone has their own experiences with each brand. Make sure you buy one with a built in ADSL2 modem and 802.11g or better wireless access point.

If you are on a really tight budget you could just get two wireless adapters and create a peer to peer 'ad hoc' network. This is not advisable when you consider how cheaply you can pickup a decent router these days (£30).

Would this work then?

Belkin F5D9012UK 54MBPS Wireless ADSL Router Bundle + USB 2.0 Adapter (NW-057-BE)
Belkin networking offers this one-box solution that lets you share your ADSL Internet connection, files, and peripherals, without cables. It combines two essential networking functions in one innovative product, an ADSL Modem with a 4-port Wireless Router. Operating at wireless speeds up to 54Mbps, the ADSL Modem with Built- In Wireless Router operates on the 802.11g wireless Ethernet standard. This standard is backward-compatible, so you can use it in combination with existing 802.11b Wi-Fi networks! Your Modem-Router also features an integrated 4-port 10/100Base-Tx Ethernet switch so you can connect your wired computers easily. Belkin makes sharing files and peripherals, such as hard drives, printers, CD-ROMs, and DVDs, easier than ever. This product allows you to connect to ADSL Internet access and share your high-speed connection, data files, and network peripherals without wires. It also protects your network from hackers using NAT and SPI firewalls. The Wireless G USB Network Adaptor easily connects your USB-equipped desktop or notebook computer to your wireless network for Internet and file sharing. Desktop users can now join the network with the ease of a USB plug-in, without opening their PC cases; laptop users can enjoy the benefits of staying mobile-while connected to the Internet!

It would work just fine. My only reservation is that it doesn't support adsl 2 so you have no potential to go over 8mbit if adsl2 it ever reaches your exchange.
