Help please: Major PC problems

Hey all,

I wondered if anyone would be so kind as to please try and shed light on a problem I've been having with my PC for several months.

About four months ago I got a message prior to starting Windows that my disk needed to be checked for consistency. I ran a few anti-malware programmes and found I had a registry error. I bought a new hard drive (WD250gb) and a new copy of Windows (SP2). I've just gotten round to installing them and I've been getting the same inconsistency warnings and it takes me between five and ten attempts to get Windows working.

I also kept getting blue screens before and wondered if it maybe a memory error.

I'm running an AMD2800+ Barton, Asus Motherboard and 2x512mb sticks of Crucial Ram.

If anybody could help I'd really appreciate it because this problem is so infuriating.

Seems to me something isn't doing its job properly. At a guess I say it was either the RAM or the motherboard. If it was a CPU problem I would expect all sorts of errors including BSODs and the like.

You can check your RAM by downloading and running Memtest86+ and see what happens. If it is OK you wont get any errors. Assuming your RAM passes I would hazard at your motherboard. The only real way of testing you motherboard is to either test all your hardware in another system with a different motherboard, or test different hardware to you own on your current motherboard.

Either solution requires a bit of spare hardware or a mate :D

Another thing it MIGHT be is an iffy IDE/SATA cable connecting your HDD. Try a different cable and see what happens.
