Help please: no video output

Hi again,

I would like some more advice please.

So I ordered this system and the parts arrived today and I assembled everything by following this guide while reading my specific motherboard and hardware manuals for installation instructions. (It’s my second build – I’m fairly competent.)

Important Note: I’m trying to use an existing CRT monitor driven by a DVI-D cable with a DVI-VGA adapter.

Everything went OK until I tried to boot the system. No beeps at the start at all which is quite worrying because the P8Z77-V manual says “One short beep: VGA detected, quick boot set to disabled, no keyboard detected.” So possibly it’s not detecting the graphics card. The fans on the card both spin so it is powered up.

However, the monitor output remains white which is what it does when there is no signal to it. I thought the PC continues to boot, however, and the keyboard lights flash and no warning lights on the motherboard are on. However, nothing displays on the screen. Eventually the boot LED remains on because it cannot boot an OS.

Plugging the DVI connector into another port on graphics card does not change things. Plugging the DVI into the motherboard video out also doesn’t work. Plugging the VGA cable from CRT into the motherboard VGA port also doesn’t work.

However, removing the GTX 570 and using only the integrated graphics with the VGA results in video output and allows me to boot bios and start installing windows 7. CPU temperature is ~27C. Removing the GTX and using the DVI output on the motherboard also does not work. It seems the only solution is to use the VGA on the motherboard.

However, in the graphical BIOS on VGA I cannot see the whole menu screen and it appears to be cropped when I do load it to only the top left of the screen. I also don’t see any white text of any description describing the hardware prior to loading graphical bios by pressing delete.

Is the graphics card dead?

Is the DVI adapter/cabling broken or faulty?

If the graphics card is broken, I presume there’s nothing I can do to it apart from RMA’ing it?

If I do have to RMA it, can I continue to install Windows 7 on integrated graphics and run for a while until the part comes back?

Or is it the fact that it’s not possible to run a CRT from the 570 with a DVI to VGA adapter? In this case I would need a new monitor. However, I don’t really want to have to buy one just yet.

What is likely wrong with it and what’s the cheapest and easiest way to find out what it is?

Hi

The DVI on the motherboard won't work with a VGA adapter as it's DVI-D so it only supplies a digital signal.

The adapter should work on the DVI connections from the GTX 570.

I can't see an option in the BIOS to force the graphics card as the display device so I assume it should auto detect it.

Is the GTX 570 in the top x16 PCI-E slot?

Have you tried reseatting it in the slot?

Have you made sure that the power cables to the card are both fitted and secure (both ends with a modular PSU)?

Have you tries clearing the CMOS? You never know....

Hi Surveyor,

Thanks for your fast & informative reply.

OK, so I replaced the GTX in the top x16 slot (where it was before) and I tried using a different modular PSU connector. Same problem. The fans spun before though so I don't think it was lack of power.

The motherboard must auto detect the graphics card because when the graphics card is plugged in, the motherboard VGA out doesn't work and so it must have been disabled. Seems a sensible thing for the motherboard to do!

I haven't tried clearing the CMOS yet.

I think my best lead for tonight is that there might be something wrong with the cabling.

I had a circuit not work once because a wire was broken - that one took ages to find!

Hi Spetz

Please remove the competitor name from your post as mentioning competitors to OcUK isn't allowed.

Didn't you buy the Antec High Current Pro 850W Modular '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply?

When you say you "tried using a different modular PSU connector" do you mean to put it in the singular?

The GTX 570 will require two 6 pin power cables or it may be one 6 pin and one 8 pin (not sure on that particular model).

Surveyor,

I'm sorry about that - accident. On Gainward's website it says the Golden Sample comes with a "DVI to VGA dongle" (in the PDF spec sheet here ) which was why I didn't order the adapter from OcUK. It didn't come with one in the box though so I had to improvise today.

Yes, the HCP comes with the PCIe power cable hard wired in. There is a modular option to add a second one for SLI/xfire configuration so that was what I tried. It appears that both power cables work. The 570 I have takes an 8-pin and a 6-pin and both are plugged in.

Ah, I thought you meant you bought a PSU from that place when you were talking about cabling.

I assume you bought something like this:

It's possible that your CRT doesn't like the VGA output (resolution, refresh rate or whatever).

Have you installed Windows yet on the PC?

Hi Surveyor,

So I took the cable back today for a replacement. The replacement allowed the graphics card to dive the monitor - success! However, the BIOS was still cropped.

So I tried using the DVI cable on the lower DVI port and now I can fully see the bios options and it worked and I can see the full bios screen without cropping.

I'm now about to install Win7 on it. Hopefully there are no hitches. :)

Thanks for your help.
