Help please - not booting

hi all,

my other puter (an oldish thing, XP opsys) has suddenly decided not to boot. last time i used it all was ok, shut down w/ no issues etc. this time however, i pressed the case button and i get the CPU fan and case fan spinning up, the blue case lights on, but there's no sound of the HD powering up - any ideas what's up and what i can check (taking into account i'm a total noob!)

hi, thanks for the replies. i get nothing at all. the lights and fan come on but the monitor remains in the sleep mode and there none of the usual sound of the HD clunking and whirring up (it's a normal one, not an SSD). machine's just sat on a desk so there's no way it could have been knocked to jar a power lead to the HD loose, i'd say. it's like power is going to normal places BUT the harddrive, but i can't understand why or how that would happen.
