Today I've been getting a message pop up as I log in on my laptop that says "Windows could not connect to the Windows System Notification Service service". A confirmation box appears above it (similar to what you get when you mistype a password while logging in). I clicked ok to load the desktop and the screen went black as usual just before the desktop is loaded. I can still see and use the mouse pointer but the screen stays black.
After twenty minutes the screen is still black so I reset the laptop and start in safe mode. I can log into the admin account on the laptop and the desktop loads but a system tray notification comes up saying the same thing as the previous notification only with an extra bit about how I can check the event logs to diagnose the problem as I'm an admin. The other thing about the admin account worth noting is that aero is disabled (it's usually enabled). In the meantime, I use my PC to search for resolutions.
I do the following (in no particular order)-
1. Scan for viruses using MSE with an up to date definitions database.
2. Scan with MalwareBytes, also up to date.
3. I install two windows updates (I always keep the system up to date).
4. I try the "NETSH WINSOCK RESET CATALOG" command which, apparently, fixes the problem I have described.
5. I use the "sfc /scannow" command and it doesn't find any faults.
6. I try restoring the laptop using a restore point from a couple of days agao when the laptop was working absolutely fine.
7. I check to see if the "System Event Notification Service" service is enabled on startup which it is but I can only check it's status on my non admin account when it is in safe mode. Again, even though it isn't loaded in start mode, it says that it starts automatically on startup.
So far, nothing has worked. Is there anything else I can do that might fix this issue?
