Can anyone suggest a way of making this all work?

I currently have a b/g wireless router plugged into the main BT socket. Two desktops at opposite ends of the house, and two laptops that move around, are connected via wireless to this. All the computers talk to each other and connect to the internet, the world is happy.

Now, I have bought a HP Microserver and I'm loading it with XP Pro to act as a fileserver/media server.
This can only be sited next to my desktop upstairs. The router can not be moved, and there cannot be a wired connection between the server and router.

So, what's the best way to add this to the network? Just buy a wireless card and add it just like another PC?

The vast majority of the data will be moved between the desktop sat next to it, so can I use a wired connection to it in this instance?

Also for remote desktop does it need a wired link as it won't have any peripherals once it's setup?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks,

Andy.

You can just clag in a half height wireless card. PCI-E of course!
You can also probably bridge the connections and use a cable to the main PC. But the PC would have to be on to access the server.

Cheers, thought a half height PCI-E would be the way forward. I'm avoiding bridging as I don't want the main PC on permanently.

So can I have the wireless connection AND a wired connection for greater speed from that PC? What about remote desktop?

Cheers.

The easiest way to do this would be add it to the wireless network with a standard wireless card

RDP only needs a connection, over wires/wireless/ADSL/even a modem at a push!
The only difference between wireless and wired is the max bandwidth available (speed of file transfer) and latency (wireless adds a slight lag to the connection).

If transferring many large files then a crossover between the main PC and the server would be a good idea but if the time taken doesnt bother you, wireless will be fine :)

Brilliant, thanks!

I have a crossover Cat5 cable at home, so will use that and a wireless card.

I can feel the plan coming together already!

Andy.
