Hi
I am running XP pro (SP 3) and I replaced a faulty IDE DVD drive with a new sata DVD drive. When I restarted the pc, I received an activation message telling me to re-activate. I clicked ok and nothing happened until i got the bsd.
Rebooted and tried again - same thing. When I rebooted again the bios had lost my HDs. On subsequent reboots the HDs are back and XP boots properly, however I have a message on screen that xp has to be reactivated in 3 days.
I have done google searches and the procedure is to run Accessories\System Tools\Activate Windows. I do not have this on my pc so I have run
"%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a"
This brings up a blank (white) Activation form. If I leave the thing running for about 30 mins the background for the form appears and I start getting error messages about scripts running slowly.
I have tried to activate it over the net (after installing the WGA plugin) but no joy. I am transferred to a page saying that it has not been activated and with options to buy Windows 7!
I have an genuine OEM version of XP, from a internet auction site, which I have been running for about 4 years without any of these problems.

I am beginning to panic as after 3 days I think that all I will be able to do with the pc is to Activate with a non working process. If I cannot get thing to work now I feel that I will have no chance after 3 days.

Thanks in advance

Problem solved.

It turns out that XP was denying itself permissions to run MSOOBE.
I changed the registry permissions and the screen finally appeared and I managed to do the activation. I spent all day and night yesterday trying to sort this out with no success and yet this morning I managed to find the solution on my first google search.

For the benefit of others who may go through this nightmare, here is a link to the solution:-
