Help, Please

I am currently running a XFX 7800 GT graphics card [default speed]
and when i turn my computer on i get a checkerd screen and my monitor wont display windows xp and says no signal.
This only happens when i boot up after leaving the computer off for a while, however when i turn off and back on again the problem is gone.
does anyone know what could be causing this?
any help is appreciated.

What PSU do you have, and what drivers are you using?

I have a 400w PSU not sure on the make.
Am tunning the latest GeForce drivers from nvidia.

Also i have found that this seems to be random and happens usually after being shutdown for the night.
