Hi everyone

Ok where do i start ive been having problems with my Pipex connection for the past 2 weeks now. The problem is that i have a 1mb connection and im getting download speeds of 20kb and in games my ping is like 100 in all servers. Thats both UT2004 and CS:S.

My friend who lives on same road as me has the exact same connection as me isnt facing any problems. We both tried a server in Unreal and his ping was 24 where my was 84. Ive had enuff and ive tried everything.

I called em yesterday useless advice, they told me to test my speed bla bla and ping servers and give em the results. Ive used The cleaner, Lavasoft Ad-ware, & AVG. All came up with nothing.

Can some one help me, i mean any advice etc?

try running tracert (Start->Run->cmd->tracert yahoo.com) See what ping you get for your first hob, this will tell you where the connection problems lie. If you have a high ping to your first router (your ISP) then the problem either lies with your modem, BT or your ISP, not the servers after that. Chances are also that the problem would be with your line and BT, not Pipex

Thanks m8 i tried it and this is what i got..

as expected, those pings to your first hop 131ms 78ms 375ms would mean to be that you have a problem on your phone line, i would try and get in touch with BT and get them to test your phone line. I doubt the problem would be due to a huge ISP like pipex.

High first hop pings could be anything between you and your ISP (including modem, BT, and the ISP).

The BT Speedtest should give some indication of what your speeds are like without Pipex in the equation, and anecdotal evidence would seem to suggest that latency issues generally aren't a result of VP congestion (which to some extent eliminates BTw).

I doubt the problem would be due to a huge ISP like pipex.

Back in the real world...it's entirely possible.

good idea, all I meant was if he had been havin problems for a while and he is connected with a big isp like pipex, I doubt pipex would be having continuous congestion problems. but true, it is of course possible!

It's quite possible, given Pipex's love of traffic shaping, that it's not congestion that's causing ping issues and reduced throughput.
The BT Speedtest would still show a better result.

Seems that near midnight it goes back to normal. I tried a server and my ping was quite low, the way it should be around 28-36. Heres the tracert of this time.

sounds like it could be a congestion problem then. is it possible for congestion to be caused by bt's network tolien? or would this be a result of a problem on Pipex's network?

Could be one or both. The BT Speedtest...

Throughput improved?
If you're not going to try a BT Speedtest while you're getting poor throughput, we're largely wasting our time here.

I did try the BTspeedtest yesterday and forgot to display results m8 sorry.

Here they are

The speed test has completed on test server speedtester1.nat.bt.com for user 01753****** and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of
968 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.
Your IP address is 2**.4*.2**.12*, your browser is reported as being Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and is running on Windows XP.
BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:
For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.
You may now disconnect from the speed test account (click 'disconnect' in your internet connection window) and if you wish to regain normal access to the internet please re-connect to your ISP using your usual username and password.
Please note that test results may vary according to varying traffic in the network. If you continue to experience slower throughput when logged in to your ISP, this may be due to a slow internet site or high traffic levels beyond the BT Wholesale Network. Please report this situation to your ISP's helpdesk

What speed is your modem reporting? - since Pipex have a habit of sticking 1Mbps users at 2Mbps then using traffic shaping to slow you down (in which case the test isn't great).

I dont know how to check what speed my modem is reporting but im gna take some guesses. When i hover over the connection is says SENT: 7,367436 AND RECIEVED 18,920,074.

I dont get it i mean towards the midnight the connection seems to be fine and that also early morning around 6am. During the day its just bad :( i dont know what to do any more :/

lol i also dont know who to contact BT or Pipex? :( any body know the number to call BT for these kinds of problems?
