help please

hey i am completely new to overclocking and am trying to overclock an e2180, i am cooling it with a geminII with two 120mm fans mounted onto it, i have so far just uped it to 2.4 and am already concerned with the temps and am thinking i have either done somthing wrong or the cooler isnt working propaly. it idles at at 30c (according to intel thermal analysis tool) and at load reaches up to 55c, is this okay?? and can i push it more?

oh and also how does overclocking the cpu effect the ram? does it slow it down? and if so how do i bring it back up to speed? thank you overclockers
 
im using a asus p5k, and i am pretty sure that the cooler is fitted propaly, i might try it with the stock cooler though just to see. what kinda of overclocking results have people got on these using the stock cooler? because mine at the moment reaches 70c at 2.6 which can be right. would i have better luck using the stock cooler, or trying to re seat the cooler?
 
okay i tried to the stock cooler instead of the geminII and i get 28c at idle compared to 35. maybe i was installing the geminII worng or somthing? anyway i have overclocked the e2180 to 2.8 at the moment and it runs idle at 28-31c and under full load no higher than 50 (it seems really weird that the stock cooler is giving me a better result than the geminII, im sure it was installed correctly) so i might try and push it a bit more and just hope that the temps dont get too high. i think i will get a tuniq tower for xmas or somthing, and hopefully have more luck with that. i still cant get my 2 sticks of ram to work in dual channel either they will run in single but not dual its weird. but apart from those problems i have cod4 running at max so im pretty happy, and crysis with the dx10 effects in xp at 25-35, i might try overclocking the gfx card as well, is riva tuner a good one to use? :)
 
no i didnt looks at it yet will do later, in a uni lab at the moment lol. You can run ram dual channel by putting the sticks in the correct slots usually (and in my case) they are the same colour mine are two yellow ones (slot 1 and 3)' when i put the ram in these slots it doesnt detect the second ram stick so i have to run them in single channel.
 
yeh im pretty sure it was done correctly i pushed it down as much as it could go, and when i took it out it had the thermal paste from the cpu on it so it must have been making contact, oh well i will just have to get a tuniq tower for xmas or somthing
 
okay i currently have it at 3.0ghz with the stock fan and it survived 30mins of orthos with an average cpu temp of 63c now is that a damaging temp? or is it okay to leave it like this? If i bring it down to 2.8 i average about 55c is this a more sensible option? and will i see any serious performance loss compared to at 3.0?

kind of, but on the giude it says to keep the vcore setting at auto and raise the fsb to 300 but with it set to auto it wouldnt boot so i kept raising it until it booted propaly and could run orthos without problems (1.320v according to cpu-z) and the ram is working in the black slots now and it says on boot that its running dual channel interleaved which i think is what it is supposed to be. oh and i am going to sort out the ram and tighten the timings by following the guide in a bit as well
 
i have set it in the bios to 1.375v i will bring it down an little and then test for stability. i have ran orthos for 6 hours with the current settings and it seems fine: cpu 3.0ghz ram 600mhz timings 4-4-4-12. i hope to eventually get this thing mastered, and then get a nice cooler when i get some money, because that geminii was awful, was a lot of effort to install/uninstall as well as you have to remove the entire motherboard, and it took up all the room of the case making it a nightmare trying to reach other components.
