Hi,

I built a new system yesterday which all went fine and is working well. I then decided to put all the old components back in to the original case that I had. This went fine but I hadn't managed to get around to booting it up till today. When I booted it up there was no signal coming to the monitor and it didn't seem to be doing anything, so I checked all the connections and they are all in place. I then decided to take out the old graphics card, thinking that it might not be working now, and try the graphics card out of the new system (which had been in the old system briefly). This worked and I got a signal to the display but it still won't boot. I get a continuos, fast beeping sound and a message saying:

BIOS Rom checksum error
Detecting floppy drive A media...
Drive A error. System halt

Now the computer has never had a floppy drive so I'm not sure why its coming up with that. So anyone any ideas?

Thanks.

How do actually go about doing that? I've never had to do it. I would look in the manual but I don't have one for this motherboard (was originally a Packard Bell computer).

Unplug the PSU. Take the cmos battery out. Next to the cmos battery will be a jumper on two of three pins. Move this jumper to the other two pins. Leave for 30 seconds or so, then put the jumper and battery back :)

CMOS reset done.

Power on the machine, press DEL to get to bios, and adjust settings to suit :)

Ok, I've tried that but it still comes up with the same message and is making the same sound as in the first post. It won't even let me into the BIOS. Also comes up with Award BIOS BootBlock v1.0 at the very top of the screen and then the message underneath. This is all with the new graphics card. If I try with the old one, I get no signal on the monitor, so no message and it also doesn't continuosly beep. It just makes the fan on the processor heatsink pulse slowly in a cycle and it also sounds like the HDD is rebooting as I hear it make the same noise every few seconds.

Sounds like your BIOS could be borked. You may have to RMA the board to have the chip replaced. You may be able to flash the bios, check the website for the board from bios tools. Although, by the error message, it is unlikely you will be able to.

Ah right, I was starting to think that going by posts on other forums that have similar messages. Anyway the board is over 3 years old now so I don't think I would be able to RMA it and plus its old technology now, so I'm not too bothered that it has gone wrong. Wonder what could have caused it? Static shock?

Some noname chinese PSU maybey ?

Possibly, its a FSP Group 250W PSU, which I believe is standard fit in Packard Bell computers, although it had been running with a Corsair 450W PSU for a few weeks prior to my new build. I did notice when I turned it on there was a quiet high pitched whistling/whining type sound so perhaps it was the PSU that has taken the motherboard out.

Well I had another look earlier and noticed that there was a jumper missing on the 3 pins that are marked safe mode. According to what is printed on the mobo if there is no jumper on 2 of those 3 pins it puts it into recovery mode. So I put a jumper on to pins 1 and 2 and also reset the CMOS again and it now boots and runs fine. I think the jumper must have got knocked off when I was installing everything back into the old case. So I'm now happy that I've managed to get it all working again.
