Hi there, am having a problem with windows xp 32 bit.
just recently i am not able to use the start bar or any start icons along the bottom of my screen.
anyone with any ideas as to how to fix this would be much appreciated.
cheers mark

A bit more info, please? What have you done with it recently? Installed any new hotfixes/service packs? What about new software? "Tidied up" any folders that you're not sure of what they are? What about playing in the registry?

Done anything recently?

cheers mate the only thing ive done is updated my free avg anti virus to 8.0.
i would use roll back on the pc but i cant use the start icon to do so lol.
really starting to do my head in .

If you log in as another user, does the same happen?

If no, then it's a profile issue - log in as a local admin (not your user account), rename the profile (C:\Documents and Settings\<Your user name>) to something else (you can delete it - but you'll delete all your files and settings as well - which is bad). When you log back in, everything will be default again. and your task bar, etc will work. you can then copy your data from the old folder.

If not... then you'll need your OS cd handy.

press crt+alt+del to open either windows security or task manager (if it's the former, press the task manager button). go to the file menu and select run. form there, type
Code:
cmd
in the command prompt, type
Code:
sfc /scannow
That will check the system binaries against the ones on your install cd - if they've changed, they'll get replaced.

You WILL have to run through windows update again.

Also might be worth running through Ad-Aware/Spybot when it's up and running again.
