Hi guys, a friend needs a new motherboard asap. The thing is i know little about the older amd boards so am very unsure as to what board to order him. He doesnt want to spend more than 50 gbp. And it has to be able to run the rest of his setup.

8 gig ddr2 1066 corsair
amd 6000+
9800+ gpu
800 watt tagan psu.

He did have a asus crosshair 1 before, but thats knackered now. Does any one have any idea what board i can get for him, to simply transfer the rest of his setup over to. Any advice would be highly appreciated, thanks guys.

what socket is the chip? if it is AM2 then there are a couple of gigabyte, asus and an asrock board in the AM2+ section for around 50 quid

You need an AM2+ board (takes DDR2). Nice thing is most of them support all the way up to the new 6 core cpus.
You cannot use the 6000+ in an AM3 (DDR3) board. This is not really a problem because there has yet to be any chip that supports AM3/ DDR3 exclusively and there is approximately no performance difference between ddr2 and ddr3.

His GFX and PSU will of course work with any board.

Make sure to choose a board that supports 125 w cpus like the 6000+ (there was also an 89w version of this chip) and the current highest performing quad and hex cores.

You'll also need a board that has 4 RAM slots, ruling out the cheapest ones.

Here's tasty budget option :

and the gigabyte info page for the various revisions (OCUK will probably send you the latest or the 1 before) :

Here's a more premium option with AMD chipset, potentially better overclocking, crossfire (although imo all dual graphics are a bad idea)
and (allegedly) more durable construction :

and a link to gigabyte's page :

Finally it's out of stock at ocuk but the board I use is inbetween; a nice quality solution for single graphics :

and Gigabyte's page :

I'd love to recommend you something other than a gigabyte but they are all either :

- DDR3
- only 2 RAM slots
- only 95w cpu support
- not available at ocuk

Hope this helps.

Edit : I just saw the £50 budget in your post. My 1st suggestion satisfies all his points at less than £50.

Just 1 thing to beware. There are only 2 sata ports (despite ocuk's picture showing 4, see the gigabyte page for correct photos) along with 1 ide port.
Of course, it's possible to use an add-on card to add more later but if he has more than 2 internal hard drives right now this may be relevant.
