So I am on VM cable, 100mb, I have the SH in modem only mode and use an ASUS AC68U as my router.

My son recently complained about the Wifi speed upstairs so I agreed he could have a second router in his bedroom connect via powerline, cheaper ASUS model.

He set second router up as AP on the same SSID.

Everything works as it should........but

I work from home and because I sit below his bedroom my laptop picks up his router rather than the main one, its only 3m away in fact. Because his router goes via powerline the speed has halved, I was getting 90mb on wifi now only 40mb and I can tell....

How do I force my laptop to connect to the main router not the AP?

I looked at trying to setup a second SSID but it appears you can only setup guest ones.

Any suggestions?

Why not just change his router's SSID and let only him use it?

The problem is they have the same SSID so it's treated like a repeater.

I guess I want my cake and eat it, having the same SSID means we all get better coverage upstairs and in fact the garden/conservatory......as the router is in the front and his bedroom the back.

But I could just switch to his SSID.

Also was thinking if I could improve the powerline connection or hardwire his router that would sort..

In the short term I just wondered if you can 'tell' a laptop to connect to the main router not the repeater/AP.

I don't think so, personally always done it with different SSIDs.

The main problem I had was with it not switching from a bad connection to a good one, though I'm surprised it would pick up the worse connection first.

Thats the issue, its the stronger signal not the fastest, because the powerline being in the middle........

Oh I see, misread your post. Yeah you're going to struggle there. I would set it up as a different SSID.

If you wanted better coverage in the conservatory, you could always manually switch to the other network.

I agree.....sometimes just sharing helps.

I will speak to him when back from college.
