Hi my son has asked me to order him a PC for gaming, Overwatch in particular and I am looking at the upgraded i5 system that is built to order here, I have my own PC that I bought from here and was happy with the product so thought Overclockers was the best place to start.

He has just bought a new monitor my question is will the base unit have an HDMI socket to connect the monitor to or do I have to try and find an adapter to achieve the HDMI connection.

I am not very computer literate so apologies if this seems like a dumb question :) any help would be great fully appreciated

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum.

Just check the connectors on the graphics card included in the i5 system (hopefully you mean a six-core i5-8XXX as they are a better choice than older four-core i5s now) for HDMI.

Link to the system if you like. What's your total budget?

Thanks Danny

IntelCore i5-6400 2.70GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail

This was the processor in the bundle - and with the upgrade the total cost was £875 and that was about the budget limit are there better alternatives this is to get him gaming on a pc rather than a PS4 he says it's better?
TITAN TRACER - GAMING PC FOR OVERWATCH - INTEL CORE I3/I5, GTX 1050TI/RX 570

Here's one with a Ryzen six-core/twelve-thread and better PSU and faster RAM (with nice white leds), 16GB instead of 8GB as well. The graphics card has a HDMI connector:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £825.54 (includes shipping: £11.70)

The build fee for that could take it up to around the £875 mark. If interested, post a thread in the Customer Service forum to ask for a custom quote. It would come with the same warranty as on the pre-builts.

If you could find Windows 10 cheaper somewhere, so that it's not required in the built system, then you could go for i5-8400 and Z370 motherboard for a few more frames on average in games. Not really a biggie though - processor and graphics are more than enough to provide excellent performance for Overwatch at 1080p, and the extra cores/threads on the processor will come in handy for any other games that use more of them. An old quad-core/four-thread i5 would be limited in this scenario. If he ever starts streaming to friends etc, then the Ryzen will also be better than even the i5-8400.

Instead what I'd do if Windows could be found cheaper, is go for a proper SSD + HDD combo, rather than the SSHD. 120/250GB SSD + 1/2TB HDD.

Here's the Intel i5-8400 version for comparison (although I wouldn't bother):

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £862.58 (includes shipping: £11.70)

Build fee could take it over the £900 mark. Case had to be changed for the ATX motherboard in this spec, as the Z370 micro-ATX boards aren't cheap. It would need a cooler, which could be sorted out by purchasing the Retail i5-8400 for £10 more, unless OcUK can just throw in a budget cooler for you.

This has to be up there surely with the budget. gtx 1060, i3 8100 is a quad core now too

Yes, a quad-core. Check the CPU forum and you'll often see quite a few posts about quad-core/four-thread CPUs struggling in some games and very low fps minimums, especially in multiplayer games.

No doubt the GTX 1060 is a better card, but as fave game is Overwatch which runs very well on less powerful cards, and price on GPUs is so high just now, I would personally get a CPU that has more staying power, along with a better PSU, etc.

I do agree and I would probably buy the first build you linked. Ryzen 1600 with the 3000 mhz Ram is a killer combo. I just always recommend gtx 1060 6gb as a minimum for a gaming rig.

I run overwatch on all low and 75% render scale. you need to try to get the highest frames possible to reduce input lag.

Thank you both for your replies very helpful as this is way beyond my comfort zone. I have taken your advice and posted the first specification including the Ryzen processor in the customer service pre sales enquiry section to ask for a build quote and await their response.

Thanks again

Chris
