Current board is GA-P35-DS4 which has a PCI-E slot which runs at 16x for the graphics, a second graphics PCI-E slot which if occupied will run at 4x and is occupied with an Adaptec 1430SA, but if I occupy the 2nd graphics PCI-E slot, the 1 x PCI-E are disabled. So, my quest is for a s775 board with 6-8 onboard SATA ports and a PCI-E graphics slot, at least 1 4 x slot and 1 or more 1x PCI-E slots which can all work at the same time. Is this an impossible quest? Thanks

Abit IP35 Pro

yes.
P35 has 22 PCI-E lanes & on most mobos they use 1 for the JMicron or equiv. for PATA & 1 for ethernet which leaves 20 left - enough for x16 + x4 but not x16 + x4 + x1.
On the IP35 Pro abit elected to use a PCI based LAN controller (the IP35-E & IP35 use a PCI-E based controller) to allow for x16 + x4 + x1.

No idea if any of the new P45 based boards can do the same.

As Cob said, the IP35 Pro is the only P35 that I know of that can give you all of those active at 1 time (because they deliberately chose to go PCI for the LAN on that board instead of PCI-E).

Asus P5Q-E board 2 x PCI-E x16, 1 x PCI-E x4 and 6-8 SATA Onboard.

Or if willing to spend more

Gigabyte EP45-DQ6 2 x PCI-E x16, 2 x PCI-E x4, 1 x PCI-E x1 and 10 SATA Onboard

comfortably exceeding what you want

P45 doesn't have 2 x PCI-E x16. It has either 1 x x16 or 2 x x8. ICHR10 also seems to have 6 PCI-E x1 lanes, making a total of 22 (just like the P35 boards, tho I'm trying to confirm this atm).

yup, still 6 PCI-E lanes on ICH10/10R

So still only 22 lanes to work with (& usually using 1 for Gigabit Nic & 1 for JMicron or equivalent) leaving only 20 available for PCI-E sockets.

What you get with the Asus P5Q-E is as follows

3 x phyical x16 slots as 1 x16 splits into 2 * x8 and 1 x4
2 x1 slots.

If one of the x1 slots is filled then the x4 drops to an x1

So can take

x8 Graphics
x8 Storage

still leaves either 1 * x4 or 3 * x1 slots available depending upon what wants.

I would like to be able to run my 7900GTO in the 16x lane (though doubt it uses that much as card is old), I have a RAID card with OS which is currently running in the second graphics PCI-e slot which when the first is occupied drops to 4x which is perfect for the card. BUT with the two graphics slots filled I now lose the 1 x slots and additional SATA cards for 1 x PCI-e are around the same or less than PCI, so it makes sense to run all PCI-e if I can.

Cheers for all the replies peeps
