ok so I thought I bought an inspiron with a 8600m GS, vista, GPU-Z, sis-soft all report it a 8400m GS 128mb card including bios. I bought a 8600m GT ebay installed it and the BIOS and vista and all other programs still see it as a 8400M GS. Is there a reason for it doing this? The p/no ties up to be the 8600m gt 256mb but pc wont install it as that... p/no: cn-0yy636-70091...... can anyone provide any assistance before i send this new card back?

no one? I have unistalled the drivers and card, swapped cards over, reinstalled and the card is still coming up as the 8400m GS. Benchies are exactly the same for the so called 8600M GT when compared with the 8400M GS. Therefore I cannot ignore all the signs that this isnt a 8600M GT.

Look up the part no's for the ram chips and check to see if you have enough to make up 256MB....

its coverered in a heat sync, dont really want to take it off. I'd rather send it back than take it to pieces. The guy cannot argue then.
