hello, im having trouble with my comp and gaming at the mo. i get intermitent game crashes on anygame i pla. i could be 20 secs into the game or 90 mins. thats what is puzzlin me.......

my specs are:
Maximus Formula
E8500, no OC for a while
4gb OCZ Sli Ready 1066 RAM
X-Fi Extreme gamer

but i have just upgraded to a 8800gt (was a hundred quid so i bought it) and its only since i installed this that i have been having problems. the temps are fine during gaming, never above 50-55 celcius. it is really bogglin my mind as only the games crash, its takes a while to alt tab, but once im on the desktop everythin runs as clean as a whistle....

help would be greatly apprecited

thanks for the quick reply and yes mate, i removed my 7900gt drivers using the add/remove programs thing in the control panel, installed the new ones without a hitch and everything was fine for a few days. only had the card since last saturday

im certainly not the best person around here we comps, but what i would do is get "Driver Cleaner Pro" which is freeware then boot up into safemode and get rid of all traces of nvidia drivers and reinstall the latest driver again, if that fails it could be something to do with the GPU or a other hardware/software problem

maybe something to do with the soundcard or its drivers?

Power issue maybe? what PSU you using?

Correct voltage running through your RAM?

Maybe try something like Prime95 as a stress test to see if you can replicate the problem?

theres always the solution of just format + clean install?

*I've found as I learn more I've got this process down to about 1-1.5 hours, and t;s often quicker/more effective than actually trying to find problems.

thanks for the replies gents, i have put my gpu fan speed to 80%, tis a bit loud but its acceptable. my temps are ok i think, they never really go above 55 celcius. the driver issue i will try, i will google the program u guys suggested and try it.

the thing that still gets me is that my gfx card and desktop runs no probs when say watchin a dvd, no crashes and no temp issues, just games..... TM forever crashes almost instantaniously, but everything else is intermitant....

PS... a reformat is an absolute last resort, i can do it pretty sharpish but have not the means to back **** up atm

Games will stress your graphics card a lot more than watching a DVD or being on the desktop - if it's a heat problem then a game will show the problem before anything else.

It could also be a driver problem. Run Driver Cleaner and re-install drivers, as mentioned above.

Could also be a power problem - maybe you PSU isn't up to the job....underpowered or not good quality.

There's really a few things it could be. All you can do is the good 'ol process of elimination.

thanks gents.. will try Driver Cleaner now. i have a 700W modular Enermax Galaxy and i think that should be ok. the computer doesnt shut down or reboot, xp runs great in the background, once i min the game game everything is ok. it doesnt blue screen or anything like that. the games just freeze. ive checked my temps when this happened on CoD4 and they where at 31, 25 and 55 for my CPU, MOBO and GFX card respectively. NB and SB are well within limits too.

Is fast writes enabled? I've had a lot of problems with that and found disabling it can fix the problem, not sure if that still exists in the newer cards though

create more than 1 partition on your hard drive(partition magic is pretty good) and never keep anything important on c:

windows always gets bugged up after a while so you should get used to backing up important stuff and keeping it away from your windows drive
