Help PS3 optical sound query!!!!

Please help. I have just setup my ps3 and have connected it to my dell monitor via component lead, and to my mac pro with an optical lead. I cannot get any sound, does anyone have any suggestions? I want to listen to it through headphones connected to the mac.

do you need to change a setting to make the ps3 use the optical output?

no idea really as i dont have one....

Can the Mac accept a Dolby Digital 5.1 signal? It would need to be able to decode it wouldn't it, like a dedicated amp?

I have the ps3 settings set for optical out, and it lists a couple of stereo settings selected by default. I don't understand much about digital sound I am afraid. I used to have an Xbox360 connected via pc for sound without problem!!!!!

is the optical port on the mac for optical out only / not optical in???

What software are you using for throughput ?
