HELP! PSU fried but should be enough power, I think

Hi, I've just bought and installed the following components in to file/media server

• ASUS WS X299 PRO mobo
• i7-7820X CPU
• 16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
  
• ASUS GeForce 750Ti Graphics Card

In addition I have the following connected

• 2x SAMSUNG 256GB SSD drives
• 3x WD RED NAS HDD

I kept my Corsair RM750i PSU as I thought it would be more than enough power to run this (it managed to handle the previous configuration which included an additional 3x HDD.. I think the CPU was an i5 from about 4 years ago), but when i turned it on I had a small puff of smoke and the PSU has gone.

Should I buy a 1000w PSU or have I just been unlucky and another 750w would handle everything?

I do intend to add 3x10TB Seagate IronWolf drives to make a total of 6xHDD but to reiterate the point from earlier I originally had 6xHDDs with an older i5 CPU which the 750w PSU handled.

Currently sat on the floor in my lounge with bits everywhere LOL.

I found the Cooler Master PSU Calculator and it said I only need 450w, so I think I've been unlucky but any tips on where I might have gone wrong when installing everything would be great

Definitely from the PSU, I can smell it and smoke definitely came from it

I doubt if your pc would even get near 200w at the wall so the psu was more than powerful enough. It probably just failed which can happen even with quality psu's from time to time. The pc in my siggy only pulls 122-268w at the wall while gaming (depending on the game) and that includes the watercooling pump, 6x 120mm fans on the rads, temp monitors and fan controllers.

Thanks pastymuncher... sounds like I have gone overkill on my PSU! I think it has just failed as there are no screws or possible shorts that I can see from my installation, it's just annoying that it happened last night and my order from Scan won't arrive until tomorrow
