Ok Ive been reading on and off for a good few weeks now and just as I goto hit the order button....I think... Ill read a bit more.

Im really stuck I 'think' between Qnap and Synology NAS.

and to top it all Im thinking 4 bay more than 2 bay...

I first considered these :

DS211j - DS 211 and then thought maybe I need the DS211+ model... more memory and faster processor..... but what will this do in real life?

If I try and decide what I want to do might make recommendations easier.

* Backup maybe 2tb of data... this will include my system SSDs.... and backup data.

at present I have a Samsung F4 2tb (new) and 2 x500gb for data. 2 x 80gb Intell SSD for OS and games/programs.

So I require backups of these seperate - will add at least 1 more F4 2tb drive to the NAS.

then Im thinking NAS will be full straight away... so 4 bay?

hmmmm

* we have an IPAD in the house Iphone and Android Galaxy S. Would like to stream video to the Ipad (wife will watch in bed) -

*dump my film connection on the NAS - we watch films on the TV downstairs via XBMC so would pull the films from the NAS - via ethernet.

* download stuff to the NAS via Torrent or ideally NZB - but can this be done via my android phone ? Not really sure how this works.

* Store / serve / backup our photo collection on NAS - available to the phones - or somebody elses PC

* New feature - would like to add maybe 2 cameras for spying.... ahem watching the house - car while away etc. Not sure how well this works and what cameras are needed but seems a cool feature.

So if anbody can chip in with there setup - Have been trying to get as much info - a quick trip over to synology forums seems to indicate people are having rubbish speed transfers... for no apparent reason on some of the NAS - dont fancy waiting for hours to transfer my data....

so - phew thanks for reading - recommendations needed for :
--------------------------------------
NAS 2 (probs 4) bay
Synology or Qnap

will be loaded with at least 2 x 2tb F4

budget £3-350 for the NAS
-----------------------------------
Anybody can help out Id appreciate it.

I've had a Synology 409 for two years now and its stable as a rock and does everything I need it to (storage, backup, media streamer) so the newer versions should be even better with faster cpu's and more memory.

Get a Synology DS410.

Had Icybox, Qnap NAS's and a self-build silent server. Synology is best combination of size / power usage / performance.

With 4x Samsung Green disks in RAID5 I easily get 80MB/sec over gigabit lan.

what was up with the Qnap particularly ?

was just looking at theres as well.

with the HP ProLiant and something like FreeNAS can I do what I want to achieve ?

what would I be loosing - nice fancy GUI that comes with the Synology and Qnap?

Am thinking I can put more drives with the HP and save some cash at the same time...

Ok decided to go with the hp proliant with 100 back while its on.

Ordered 2 x hitachi sata 3 drives (were same price as the f4)

and 1 x 4gb ram.

Was the hitachi a good choice if i put a usb 3 card in my pc.... and one in the hp for faster transfer rates to it?

Which card will fit in the hp box guys?
