Help recover files from corrupt windows. (urgent)

Hey, my sister has brought me her laptop.

A format and fresh installation of windows will fix the problem, but I first need to recover her stuff somehow and burn it to a cd.

Is there some sort of bootable program I can use to do this?

Something like a lite linux boot from CD, which will let me browse the HDD and burn important files to CD.

Not considered just doing a repair install?

Good point, there's a repair option from PEbuilder which repairs system files (CHKDSK).. Has saved the day many a time.

I would have pulled her drive out of her laptop and using a caddy, plugged it into my machine and copied the files over.
