Hi guys, just received the Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 PCS Extreme GFX card, popped it into my system, first go stuff seemed to work, booted into windows (didn't change anything whilst I was there, had 2 monitors plugged in and only one was working).

I then restarted and it now it no longer works at all! Depending on how many times I start / restart the computer, sometimes the GFX fan stays off and sometimes it whizzes full blast, but my PC now wont post / boot (nothing displayed on screen at all with DVI cable in either GFX socket).

I have a maximus formula as my mobo, the LCD display just gets stuck on VGA Bios but gets through CPU / Ram etc. fine.

I swapped the card back to a very old x850xt and everything was fine, booted into windows, updated my mobo bios, etc, swapped back to the 4870 and still nothing!

I've tried resetting cmos, updating the bios, powering on / off numerous times, reseating the card, using various power cables to power it (combination of adapters / normal 6 pin PCI-E connectors) but no joy.

I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong + what to try next and was hoping one of you lot could point me in the right direction.

Thanks

i had a similar problem with my 4850 it would come on sometime and others it wouldnt.

in the end i took everything out and build my comp again then it worked, no problem since.

Yes I've connected 2 PCI-E leads, I have a Corsair 620W and just tried it with my brother's PC (got a Tagan 480W) with the same results.

It doesn't make sense how it can boot up fine(ish) and be dead after a restart ;\

I've taken out all other PCI card and made sure the RAM + Processor are seated correctly, I've run out of ideas now tbh.

Will try in another PC that has a corsair 520W a bit later I think.

That's so annoyin I wanted it for the weekend :P

Will give it one last go.

What's the best strategy do you think? Send it back under 7 day or as faulty? If I do the latter and they find nothing wrong with it I'm a bit screwed.

Or should I try and flash the firmware to fix it?

Thanks

Yeh I booted with an x850 with the 4870 in another slot, there's no life in the fan or anything so I dont think it would work. When I left my PC off for a while though and put it back in, I got to the bios screen before the display went dead, the mouse + keyboard were still on though ;\

Will just have to RMA it ;<

sounds like a dud card. did you buy it from ocuk? cause im pretty sure if you ring them they will sort out a replacement without you having to go through the business of getting it rma and waiting a number of weeks.

Yeh got it from OCUK, I need to give them a ring regarding the monitor they sent me too, if they messed up the order would I still have to pay for return shipping?

Thanks
