Hey guys

This is on behalf of my dad who is getting a Audi a3 to replace his bm 5 series.

He has a private registration on the BMW and wants to know if he can put the old (original) registration back on?

'Once i have filled out my V317 form (vehicle registration) and retention for number plates and sent it too Swansea with a cheque for £105 what do i do next? Can i put my old number plate on the BMW (want to keep my private one for the audi) and what do i do with my V5 document (Log Book) Can't talk to any humans at DVLA at swansea '

Yes. The cars original registration is non-transferable.

The DVLA will send you the documents out.. it's normally a lot easier to go along to your local office as they can handle most of the paperwork for you :)

IIRC once your insurance/MOT/Tax etc is changed you are legally able to display the plate again.

You have to wait for them to send the stuff back to you. But like I said, if you go along to a DVLA Office they can do most of it for you :)

Downgrading from a 5 Series to an A3 :( A3 is the sort of car you buy your wife.

Please elaborate again :p from a technical pov.

BMW Is 520 ISE 2.2 2001

Audi is a A3 TDI 2.0 Sportsback/sports

2 more questions :)

What forms do i have to wait for from the DVLA before i can put my old number plates back on the BMW so I can sell it?

Has anybody got any idea how long this process takes to complete?

Thanks :D

You have to wait for the MOT, tax disc and V5 to come back before you can sell it. The V5 takes a few weeks, well it did on mine. The MOT and tax disc took only a few days and you can change the plates immediately but as you are selling you need the V5.

I've just put a registration on retention, I filled in the V317 and took it to the DVLA local office with the most recent MOT certificate and the V5 registration document and a cheque for £105 which is the £80 reg transfer fee and £25 for 1 year’s retention.

After a few days I received the new registration and a certificate so I could get the new plates made up, a new MOT certificate and tax disc, it also included an envelope to return the old tax disc. A couple of days after that I received the new V5 registration certificate and then after another couple of days had passed I received the retention certificate for my private plate.

Although the DVLA say allow 30 days for anything to happen, mine was all completed within a week.

The whole process, from the application to receiving the V5 back should take approx 4 weeks.

You should receive your MOT disc, Tax disc and certificate to put your old registration back on within about 7 working days.

If your Dad hasnt already done so, get him to do the process in a main DVLA office - should speed the process up slightly.

i was going to type that i'd rather have the A3 than the 520i, but now i'm not so sure.

i think the fact it's an SE sways me towards the A3. it's not a bad car, by any means.

Well as the A3 is much newer they are not comparable, its not the 'why bother' more the 'why downgrade', surely a newer verison of what he has is better in every possible way.

maybe he doesn't need such a big car, maybe an E60 in the spec he wants is too expensive..

and you really don't want a pre-LCI E60 tbh :p
