I had one on my bike (still do but haven't ridden it in years) it is a long bolt that compresses the whole headset together. I think this was called an 'A-headset' style? Not a road bike quill style unit.

Yeah, googling shows lots of 'top caps' but I had a special long bolt with CNC washers top and bottom to compress it all and keep it tight, was supposed to be 'better/stronger' back in the day, 20 years ago...

Can't think of the name of it? But doesn't seem like they are still around?

Took a bit of googleing, as I too vaguely remember something like that in the early 2000's, even though the star nut did (and still does) the job perfectly well.

Azonic Head Lock?

Looks like there were a few different models/makes if you search for "headlock MTB".

Yes remember that very well!
Recognize all the Pace stuff on the Mint Sauce bike too. Lovely stuff, but never had any!

I think my bike originally came with purple anodized cantilever brakes and wheel QRs, It wasn't very colour coded after all the different parts and hand me downs got thrown at it. But was cool at the time!
