Hi
i have a work computer that was on a domian.
i wanted to make a little network to connect two laptops. i took a note of the domain name then went to system properties and clicked network id (computer name tab) that brought up the network id wizard.
clicked 'this computer is for home use' etc
when i restarted the computer it still brings up my work Log on screen where it asks for my username and password

so when i try to log on it just states the domain is incorrect.

i cant even start windows with safe mode command prompt as it takes me to the logon box again.

is there anyway i can restore the system to what it was

i have the domain name written down

i'd love to get this sorted before i go back to work lol

On the log on screen, is there a drop-down list with a "COMPUTERNAME(this computer)" option? It sounds like you're still trying to log on to the domain, which isn't there obviously. This is only useful if you have a local computer account though.

As for re-adding yourself, you need a domain administrator password which I assume you don't have so you'll have to inform your IT guys. :)

i can take it to the office tomorrow
so if i connect using the ethernet cable should the domain drop down appear or...?

Nope, sounds like it's now part of a workgroup.

Someone with administrative perms will need to login and re-join it to the domain for you.

Unless you created a local account on the computer before disjoining the domain or know the local admin account password then you won't be able to login. The username and password you have is for the domain and now that you are no longer part of it it won't work.

If you've taken it off the domain, without resetting the local administrator's account and now it is off the domain and now on a workgroup - you've locked yourself out.

Unless you know the local username and password.

What you can do now; download Herin's Boot CD and boot up with it. It will allow you to reset the local administrator's password and after that, you should be able to login as per normal.

Except it won't be on the domain... and I doubt very much the IT staff will appreciate this.

Yep depending upon your company's IT Security policy this would be a severe warning if not dismissal for severe misuse of company's IT policy.
I know where I work if I came across a PC that has had this done plus the administrator account password changed via a boot cd we would be obligated to report the issue to IT security and they would throw the book at the individual.

It really depends on how your company deals with IT Security but, I would probably quit why your a head.

I was having another look in windows mini (hirens boot cd) and found a registry restore program. Fired it up and restarted. Bang! Back to where it was, logged in and panic over haha
thanks for the help again I would recommend that boot cd to anyone :)
