Hello :)

I am building a new rig today which consists of all brand new components apart from the HDD, which I will be using form my old rig.

However, I want the HDD to feel as though it is new.

I have windows 7 OEM installed, but no longer have the disc so I don't believe I will be able to reformat it using that method?

If i were to use http://www.dban.org/ on the HDD would that restore the HDD to factory defaults, and be as ready as new to install a new OEM windows 7 on it for the new system?

The name of the software sounds quite intimidating and I don’t want it to effect the HDD's performance, so I thought I'd ask here first.

Thanks.

Dude, a brand new rig with a crappy old pata hdd is a huge waste of money, unless you're replacing the hdd sometime soon.
HDD are always a bottleneck anyway, but a pata one is 2 gens behind the times i'm afraid.
Sorry for the digretion, back to your op, what are you installing on your new rig if you don't have a windows disk?
If you did have a disk, obviously you reformat the hdd as part of the new install. Nothing extra is required,

So Samsung hd103si ATA is useless?

I have windows 7 OEM running on this HDD, as it's OEM it's tied to this systems bios?

So i have a new copy of windows 7 OEM for the new system.

did you read my reply? ignore joes outburst.

oem os is NOT tied to a bios, it's ment to be only used on one system(hard disk and motherboard) but as long as you're not using the old pc then you can use the old oem on the new pc(I've done it a number of times with xp with motherboard/hdd changes).

Dam, I was told that If I was changing my Motherboard then I'd need to get a new operating system if iI was using OEM.

So I can just install the HDD on my new system and use the Windows Seven that is Installed on the device?

The specs of my new Rig are:

Intel Core i5 2500K Unlocked, S1155

1.5GB Asus ROG GTX 580 Matrix, 4008

Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO, 4 Heat

8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance

MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3), Intel Z68, S 11

850W PSU, Coolermaster Silent Pro M

Bitfenix Colossus, Monilith Black,

(Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64) - Which i will return if what you are saying is true. :)

no you can't just pop in the hard disk in the new system, you have to format the hard disk and do a fresh install but you can use the same cd key.

you said you no longer have the old win7 disk, why not?

Scrap that: I have just found it :)

I thought it got discarded as I have moved home 3 times since I had originally purchased it.

did you do a spec me thread on here before ordering? if you did people would have advices you to go with corsair etc for the psu and to change the ram to low profile(I.e without fins) as the fins on the ram will interfer with the cooler, you'll have to use slot 2&4 for dual channel and wouldn't be able to put any more ram in the future to use all 4 slots unless you change to custom water-cooling or closed loop liquid cooling such a the corsair h60.

I got a good deal on the PSU which is why i went with the Coolmaster one. It also seems to have good reveiws online so I didnt see it being a problem.

Will the fins on the ram 100% interfere with the cooler?

The reason i opted for that RAM, was because i also got a good a good price for it.

Cheeky ninja editor!! :p

Yeah, i agree with you though, win7 will reactivate a few times before it gets flagged. When it does, ring em, follow the instruction for reactivation.

As it will only be the second time It's being used, (on the same HDD but seperate MB) do you think it will be highly unlikely that it will be flagged?

Ah, you guys have been great help :)

My components should be arriving in the next hour now, as you can almost defiantly guess; it is my fist build.

SSD worth the investment at the moment?

Personally, i think its the biggest performance boost you can give to a pc. All my quality builds use SSD's now.
Couple that with a 1tb sata for you files, and you'll have a great rig.
Suggestion: return the Win7 pro you bought and get a SSD for your OS and apps. All data and docs and be placed/redirected to the sata drive.

That is exactly what I was thinking of doing. :)

Would a 64GB be enougth or isit worth paying the extra for a 120GB?

Well mine is a 120Gb Vertex 3, and i have win7 x64 Ult. office 2010, Adobe CS5, BF3, BFBC2 and a few more games installed and have about 10gb left.

Considering the OS would have probably cost around £105 (?) i'd add the extra £20 to get one of the drives fowler suggested. They're all good.
Then sit back and watch windows boots up in 15 secs. :D Plus all the other read/write benefits.

OS came to £68 :) I dont want to push to far over my Budget as It's my girlfriends Birthday this week and this system has skint me enougth as it is.

I think I'd be happy with just the OS running on the SDD, and maybe battlefeild if i could fit that on a 64GB too.

I think I may give the SDD a miss as I am to eager to get the system up and running by tonight.

Plus by sending the OS back it will bring me back under budget just nicely. (I was annoyed that I had to buy a new one in the first place)

I will look at getting an SSD in the future though; it will also give me something to look forward too.

as it's your first build good luck getting it done in one day ;)

I could just be slow but it still takes me couple of days to build even after 5yrs :)

order the ssd now and it should arrive tomorrow, get the system built tonight and switch on to see if it posts and boots into the bios. pop the ssd in tomorrow and install the os :)

oh and if you bought the motherboard from here or a couple of other participating etailers you get £25 back due to vat cashback offer http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18338613

have a look at the t&c for the etailers involved as can't name them on here http://msicashback.co.uk/terms.html

Yes I am aware of that offer, thanks :)

So guys i got an SSD. Crucial m4 128GB....

I want to use the SSD just for the OS and games that I want to play regularly.

How do I stop files downloading directly into the drive? E.G. I've downlaoded firefox but it goes straight into the SSD under Program Files..

I have my 1TB HDD also installed.

Thanks :)
