I have an old 2004 Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc Pro I use for commuting and the Bottom Bracket as started making a "click" with each rotation and there is slight play when I pull on the arms.

Firstly am I right in assuming the BB needs replacing?

I have been to my LBS who say then can do this for me for about £70 which will included a service but there is a 6 week wait

Now I'm not inept when it comes to mechanics and working with tools etc. and have watched YouTube vids of this procedure and it does look very easy to do.

So what I'm asking is.... Can anyone link me to a nice cheap quality replacement BB and the correct tools to do the Job from start to finish including puller etc. Also I assume I'll need to get some grease?

Thanks

tbh a service would cost you £40 normally and the parts are £20 alone, so £10 for fitting?

£70 sounds a good ball park figure. Shimano UN55 BB is ~£20 rrp + £40 service + the odd cable during the service.

You will need one of these to remove the crank arms to get into the BB itself.

Assuming it is a square taper BB that's fitted on the bike.

6 week wait....think I need to open a bike shop in Nottingham!

Just come back from my LBS (leisure lakes) where i was told that the BB and 2 tools i need to do the job would be roughly £60 but there is some confusion over if it's a "spline" or not?

Thing is my bike can't be worth more than £100, apart from the BB it's in great condition but it is old!

The other lbs near me sell the same junk Argos do so wouldn't really trust them

I'm really looking for the cheapest way of getting this fixed as i'm also saving up for a decent road bike.

That's what I can't remember, you buy the tools, you only use once, waste of money in my opinion.

Better let the shop do it, not a bad price they quoted.

I'd just get the shop to do it really.

Splined BBs need a larger end on the crank puller as the hole in the axle is larger.

If you can get a pic of what's on the bike it would be easier.

Took it to the shop today, it turned out to be square taper and a BB was not needed, turned out it was just loose! the mechanic took it apart cleaned it up and put it back together and I'm picking it up tomorrow.

Only ended up costing me £15... Result!

Means more in the kitty for my Road Bike :)
