Help request - Catalyst drivers and control center, BSOD

Hi all!

Earlier today I decided to update my Catalyst drivers to the latest 7.1 set.

Normally when I have updated my ATi stuff I just install it over the old drivers without any problems (probably the first mistake right there).

This time however, when the program tried to install the control center I was graced with a BSOD and a reboot.

I then decided to try and uninstall all Ati stuff using add/remove programs, but again, when trying to uninstall CCC - BSOD.

So I thought sod it, I don't really use CCC anyway, and the driver itself seems fine. BUT whenever I right click on the desktop it automatically tries to install CCC and crashes my computer if I am not on the ball and click cancel. Very very annoying.

The following list is what I have tried so far to fix this problem:

System restore

Manually remove all Ati directories, including those in doc + settings

Manually remove all ati*.* files from system32 and system32/drivers

Delete all ati references from the registry.

Use registry mechanic and regcleaner to try and fix the registry.

All of the above in safe mode.

I have looked at various tweak guides etc but still no joy.

Any ideas guys and gals? Am I being daft and missing something obvious?

The ideal solution would be to get rid of all Ati bits and pieces and just do a fresh install, but that is easier said than done.

Thanks for reading, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, you know I had a problem similar to this. I have a spare X300SE which I was trying it on (main card is in RMA). I don't know if there is a problem with the 7.1's. I did try the 6.5's which had the same problem however I did not driver clean between the two installs nor was the problem as bad with the 6.5's - took a lot longer to BSOD.
