Hi everyone.

Well my trusty PC of 4 years is on its last legs and I just got a tax rebate, so time to get a new one!

I don't know too much when it comes to this which is why I'm asking for suggestions. I have around 1k to spend. However I do want to buy a second monitor and perhaps a keyboard, although the latter isn't necessary.

Usage:
General gaming. It would be great to play Elder Scrolls Online at ultra high in 1920x1080. My current pc can barely manage medium textures.. -_-
I may want to take some work home in the future. I use Patran / Nastran as finite element packages as an engineer. Patran is graphics intensive so should be fine if playing ESO is fine. Nastrans performance comes from the processor and ram.

I'd assume 8gb ram is fine for my needs but I'd like the option to upgrade to 16 in the future. For the case, I was thinking mid tower, window would be cool but not necessary and preferably a fan at the top because it will have to be somewhat near the wall at the back of the pc. Also does it matter if the airflow is clear? I think I've seen a case where the hardrive etc is out of the way of the airflow and it was split into compartments. Not sure if that helps or not, but it seemed a cool idea to me!

Sorry if there's any typos. Wrote this on my phone!

Cheers!

Here's something to start.
YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £251.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £97.99
1 x Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E250B/EU) £79.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £56.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED38G2400HC11CDC01) £49.99
1 x BitFenix Comrade Midi-Tower - White Windowed £39.95
1 x Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler £24.97
Total : £615.97 (includes shipping : £11.75 Ex.VAT).

Can be upgraded to 16GB RAM with another 2x4GB DIMM. Midi-tower case with window, but no top fan slot. A lot of cases around that price point are iffy as they don't offer proper USB3 ports. Or there's the NZXT Source 210 for that top fan and no window, depends on what you want to spend on a case. I haven't specced a graphics card or monitor yet, got ~£400 of the budget left for it. PSU isn't modular and depending on the monitor/GPU ou can spend a bit more on a different case/PSU.

I'd recommend waiting a bit till AMD release their new cards for more options/better value for money cards (i.e. buy the GPU a tad later). On the subject of the monitor, I know 1080p, but what size and what features? Otherwise I'd suggest something like this...

1 x Asus VE278H 27" Widescreen LED Multimedia Monitor - Black £169.99

It's a TN panel, but it shouldn't matter if you don't move out of viewing range. I have one of these and I recommend it.

I was told by a friend not to bother going for an i7 as an i5 would perform fine for gaming etc and I could use the money saved on a better graphics card?

I was looking at a GeForce GTX 760. Would this be good enough (for future proofing a bit as well?)

I guess a TN panel is fine as is a non-modular PSU

You are correct about the i5. Not really a massive difference with i7 other than the clock rate.

The GTX 760 is old architecture and not recommended, especially considering the price they are now. You're looking at a 290X, 280X GTX970 or GTX980 if you want decent performance that will last a while

I think the one to go for then is a GTX970 4gb GDDR5

Also, is there much of a difference between 8gb RAM that is ~1800Mhz and the 8gb RAM that is around ~2400Mhz? I assume the 2.4k is faster, but noticeably so or just a waste of money?

I've run one with an Antec 500w power supply before. It's really more about the quality and the 12v rail output than simply overall wattage.

That said 520w is cutting it a bit fine, especially once you start overclocking so I'd always go for something with a bit more oomph tbh.
