Ok guys, after my recent questions regarding my son getting a half decent gaming pc, the one that was for sale on fb has been forgotten, after some great advice on here.

Reluctantly I have agreed to build him one, even though my knowledge of pc building is minimal. He was originally going to spend £850 for a second hand one, so I have agreed to make up his money to a max of £1200.

I already have most of the smaller parts, (SSD's, power supply, hard drive, monitors, keyboard, mouse etc)

What I am looking for now is motherboard, cpu, ram, gpu. Can anyone give me some advice on what to get for a pretty decent gaming rig, that will be vr ready.

I have already had a look, but am not so good at picking the parts. So far I have kinda decided on:-
Intel Z390 AORUS PRO
Core i7 9700K
Corsair Carbide Air 540 Cube Case Black

As I said, I have minimal building knowledge, and even less knowledge regarding AMD cpu's/boards

Any help greatly appreciated.

Well firstly should you live local to me happy to help if you get stuck.

Secondly it is easy, if you take your time. :)

what parts exactly? ie make and model
I have 2 x Gigabyte 240GB SSD's (brand new), 1 x 4TB Western Digital HDD (very little use), Corsair RM 650 power supply, (older model but brand new in the box) I am running 3 x LG D2342 Full HD Cinema 3D monitors, but could also be looking at a new one depending how much cash we have left.

60hz monitor . ryzen. Intel still has easy lead with 1080p gaming but need the monitor and GPU for it to shine . hence esports firmly using intel for next 2 years.

want to push away from consoles, 144hz monitor .

£800 budget

^^ forgot to add case

pushing budget and max fps and monitor - should also maintain max fps for VR so no getting sick

pure power- Using your 3 1080p 60hz screens for triple monitor (5760x1080) game play- UPSCALE to 1440p for sharper quality- though overkill unless your playing some intensive VR

The 9700K is a total waste unless you have a) a 144hz monitor and b) a pretty monster GPU to feed the 9700K. I would say a 2070 Super would be bare minimum.

If you're sticking with 1080P 60hz (which is fine) the 3600 is by far the best CPU option and costs a fraction of the 9700K. Something like an RTX2060 Super will feed such a display for a long time at great settings.

The advice above to use the budget to get a new 144hz monitor isn't a bad shout either. Makes a big difference in games to be able to play >60hz, the fluidity is something else.

I would say if you have the other basic parts, I'd splurge on a 3600, B450M*, 16GB 3200mhz, 144hz monitor and RTX2060 Super or 2070 Super, whichever you can afford.

*B450M currently have some issues with Ryzen 2, they need a bios flash with supported CPU before they can be used with new CPUs. Some places will flash the board for you before shipping, not sure if OCUK would do that. I don't think it makes huge sense to spend the same on an X570 board as the CPU itself.

I woukd suggest going for a ryzen 3600 instead of an i7 as you get more than sufficient performance for 1080p gaming at ultra in any game when paired with a 2060 and above.

You can use the saved cash to go for a freesync 1440p monitor.

Another question arises, I use a 3 monitor setup, mostly to work on 3D designs, Solidworks Cad/Cam, and I find it invaluable to have 3 different views of the same part open.
I also occasionally play Euro Truck Simulator 2, and Asseto Corsa type games, so how would it work out with a freesync monitor in the middle, then two LG D2342 monitors, one either side ?

Ok guys, I just can't make a final decision on this build yet, so am going to look at things a different way. Could anyone suggest a monitor & graphics card combo that I could look at around £400, maybe £500 at a push ? I would be hoping for 1440p / 4K (or am I just dreaming) can be either AMD or Nvidia. There's just far too much choice for someone as inexperienced as me.
