....Survive a trip to Mongolia going the long(ish) way round, we are hoping to do this 8,800mile trip in 28days. Our intended route:

mongolianroute.jpg

As the route takes us down a few questionable paths we would ideally like the following characteristics for our gallant steed:

4wd - Mountain ranges, deserts and our navigation so a 4wd would defiantly be a bonus.
High ground clearance - Due to some countries unable to provide us with a smooth tarmacked road (how rude!) something able to handle the multitude of potholes would be an advantage.
Reliable as possible - We are equipped with only basic mechanical skills!
25mpg+ - Otherwise I may have to sell my body to pay for petrol half way round and no one would be interested.

The rules the Rally insist we have to get our steed in Tax free (so maximum £££ to the charity at the end) and to get it in Tax Free it has to be:

Less than 100,000miles on the clock from the day we set off
Less than 15 years old from the day we set off (July the 11th 2009)

AND either of the following

LPG (duel fuel) or
Some sort of Commercial Vehicle (Pick Ups, Vans...anything as long as it's either got an open back OR no rear seats and no rear windows (we can't just take the seats out and box up the windows either!)

The Budget: £1,500

For anyone interested in the Rally please take a look at Charity Rally Website

Within the criteria for £1500?

There are a couple on auto trader that are under the millage and close on the years so a bit of shopping around it shold be doable. It's going to be a bit ropey but so is just about any car that fits the criteria, the jeep Cherokee sugested above would probably be the way forward I had no idea they could be picked up so cheap.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone :D

a1ex2001 - My first thought was a Hilux but I've not found any that fit the criteria and under £1500, they really hold their value!

Firestar_3x - Jeep Cherokee 4.0 with LPG conversion - Brilliant idea! will add this to my daily searchings, it would definatly fit the bill as anything with an LPG is accepted, are they very reliable?

[TW]Fox - Your totally right, but in Mongolia (apparently) it's very popular and because of this they fall into the tax exempt status. The biggest problem is when LPG is not available and the petrol tank has been reduced in size to accommodate it....which then leaves us with a tank that only does 120miles in some cases!!

This you may roll it and die but its cheap lpg AND commercial. :D

EDIT: there is also another one of these on the rally so you might be able to help each other if something goes wrong + plrnty of space to paint profanities on the side of it:D

How much can a Merc Unimog be had for these days? I know it's diesel and not LPG, but they're definately tough enough for the trip. Not very comfy though.
