Help required on NAS setup

Was hoping someone could help me setup my NAS - I actually dabbled with the NAS a few years ago and, whilst I got it working, I gave up on it due to a speed issue (that was probably firewall related looking back on it).

I have the NAS and 2 PCs hooked directly into the router.
Last time I tried, I did the following (copied from an old post) but for the life of me I can't remember how I did it!

"got the IP address the NAS was using then setup the NAS software to link to that on a static IP (couldn't get dynamic working) and mapped the directory in My Computer."

As it stands, on my win7 machine (let's call it PC1) the network is showing both PCs but no NAS. PC2 is only showing itself on the network.
Also tried logging into the router admin - that shows PC2 and the laptop (wireless) but not PC1.

Have tried entering the default NAS IP the manual states into the browser but no go there.

Depending on how the NAS is set up it might not show up as a windows network device. You may need to connect to it manually using UNC path.

You will need to sort out getting all the PCs visible on the network, This will mean turning on file sharing for the active network profiles and making the PCs discoverable.

You'll need to web into the NAS and configure the shares on it then connect to them using \\<NASIP>\sharename

Thanks skid, I'd tried making pc1 discoverable but not turning on file sharing - will making the pc's discoverable have any impact on the visibility of the nas though? Take it the laptop doesnt need to be discoverable?

No. You should need to touch the client file sharing config.

Have you tried "browsing" to \\nas_ip ?

What NAS is it?

It's an old P.O.S. :D Model is Argosy HD363N.

I'd tried the default address the manual mentions too http://storage/

well that's a hostname, that won't reliably work unless everything is using netbios or you run an installer CD or something that pops an entry in your hosts file.
Does it say what the default IP settings are? Does it pop up in the DHCP client table on your router?

Ok, got sharing and network discovery turned on on both machines.

This morning from PC1 the network is showing PC1 and PC2.
From PC2 the network only shows PC2.

Logging into the router's 'active PNP devices' from either machines just lists PC2.
Looking at the active DHCP client table there are 3 entries: IP's from the home network ending 100, 101 & 103 (there's a time expired table next to it, 100 & 103 show 'forever', 101 shows 2910secs).
I've tried browsing to all 3 addresses.

The router manual also lists a default IP which I've also tried.

The default IP in the router manual will be the default IP of the router. You want the default IP of the NAS and you will likely need to adjust your PC config temporarily so it's on the same network range as that default IP if it's statically assigned.
Tbh the manual will pretty much do it step by step, just reset it back to factory defaults and follow the manual.

Sorry, I've been trying to get this working for 2 days straight now and writing jibberish!

I meant to write 'I have the NAS default IP from the NAS manual'.

I think there's something up though - I tried hooking the PC straight up to the drive again and following setup as listed for static/default IP as noted in the NAS manual but still can't connect to it. And the send/receive lights on the back of the NAS are blinking throughout.

Could the way the drive is setup itself be an issue? It's FAT32 formatted.
