Hi guys, I posted earlier regarding my laptop issues with it no being able to boot and so on. Sadly, I got no replies... but the laptop has completely failed now (It posts but doesn't boot)... and the HP diagnostics suggest that the Harddrive is to blame.

Now I did some research and a replacement HP approved what not drive is around £80 :|... for a 250 gb drive. Now its a standard Laptop Drive with Sata connection.

I was thinking that I could maybe put just a another laptop drive in (I would then lose the laptops recovery partition and what not) and then install Win 7 on it.

A few questions... its running HP's bios... Will it flag any errors? Else, do I need to flash it (I really really really really REALLY don't want to do this)...

What else do I need to look out for?

and in your opinions, what do you think my next course of action is? I'v already lost 100 GB's worth of data (I can get the important stuff back though :) ) and I really don't want this happening again so all advice is welcome.

Laptop is a HP DV6-1111ea with a AMD Turion x2 Dual Core Mobile RM-72 running at 2.1 Ghz with 4 GB of Ram. Graphics card is unknown (I forgot) but I think its a Ati 3 series card... with 256 dedicated but it has access to the rest of the mem.

Thanks in advance

Ash

it's a nvidia graphic chip. that's a common problem with that laptop. make sure the chipset is working properly before you buy a hdd. hdd 250gb not that expensive though. you could but any brand of 2.5" sata hdd. the price is under £40.

First thing I would do is remove the HDD and check the connection. Although it's more than likely SATA it may also be IDE if it's an older machine. Then just buy a replacement, stick it in and install Windows. I wouldn't worry about losing the recovery partition tbh. It's handy to have but when used, it will install all the bloat that the machine had on it when new.

Thats wierd... its a Ati Sticker lol... I guess they lied?

My main question is that will the Bios cause any problems with it being a HP one?

Phil, i'll check the connection again. If its IDE, i'll just get that drive.

but as said before... will the bios cause any problems?

Otherwise, i'm happy to buy Win 7 and a new harddrive tonight.

Edit: Regarding the Graphics Chip, the system used CCC... Surely, it can't be nVidia :S?

I'm pretty sure its Sata btw. I will upload some pics in a minute just to be on the safe side.

100% certain your laptop will use SATA, so virtually any 2.5" laptop will fit.
I think your laptop uses ATI, as I bought a similar one from high street chain August last year and returned for a re-fund.

Hi guys, sorry I practically bumped this thread. I still need to know if the HP bios will play up with the Windows 7 install.

Also, can I install 64 bit OS if the previous was 32? I assume I can but can someone confirm?

Thanks again, Ash
