Hi guys

Looking for some help and advice on an issue I am experiencing with my system.

I am attempting to upgrade from a Ryzen 3200g to 5800x, when I have replaced the chip, the system does not post. There is nothing displayed at all.

I have updated my x570 Tomahawk motherboard bios to Version 7C84v14, which I believe is the one with compatibility for the 5000 series processors.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This is my first build,

What graphics card are you using. It’s just I had a similar issue last week with the same board. It was all working fine. Did fresh install with a 3700X. Then swapped that for a 5600X. When I swapped I got the same issue as you. Although if I left it a while. It would eventually get to windows. Just black screen, no bios cues etc. After a bit of Googling I found some nvidia update to upgrade the display output on my 1080ti. Odd. But it worked.

Hey man, did you have any luck getting this sorted? I'm running into a similar issue with my 5900x on the b550 I strix motherboard

No mate. I have got nowhere. It’s ridiculous that this is so difficult.

I even contacted a ‘local expert’ who was quick to say that the cpu must be dead. The number of issues I have seen lead me to believe that it isn’t

I'm thinking the same. Seen too many similar cases to assume the just a blanket case of "you got a dead chip." Although in fairness most people seem to have solved the issue with a BIOS update... so maybe..

It's been such a pain trying to troubleshoot this.

You're telling me. To top it off I am now having issues with my XMP profile not changing the chips to 3600 when the pc boots. XMP1 and 2 seem to be busted.

All of this is so disheartening. Seems like I am going to be stuck with this forever

Update: Managed to boot with the 5900x!

I tried a couple things at once so I'll list both as I'm not sure which was specifically the solution.

1)

You gave me the idea here to try setting my 3600Mhz ram back to its default "Auto" in the BIOS with my 2700x installed. This sets it back to 2133Mhz in case there was some conflict there. My mobo also seems fussy about keeping RAM profiles. Again not sure if this helped, but is what it is.

2) Originally I'd updated my BIOS through Asus's "EZ Flash 3 Utility" which can only be done through BIOS with the machine booted. This seemed to work and yesterday I verified that it had indeed updated ...however... this time I instead used the BIOS Flashback button on the back of my mobo to update again with the machine turned off. > waited for bios update to complete > test booted with the 2700x still installed > shut down and swapped to the 5900x > huzzah! boots up now. (I set my ram profile back to 3600 at this point)

I hate solutions like this when I can't pinpoint exactly what went wrong. But yeah hope this helps you in some way to get up and running too mate!

Glad to see yours is back up and running mate.

here the nightmare continues. I turned off my XMP and resorted to changing the PCIE slot on my 3080 to slot 2. That did eventually post but not onto my primary monitor. I thought I had cracked iot at this point. But whenever I attempted to connect a second display the system crashed.

Performance was absolutly shocking. Watching a 4k vid on youtube crashed the system. I could't start any games and when I attempted to connect my other monitors the system completely crashed. I have pretty much given up for now.

Maybe the cooler is on too tight?

I've got the 5800x from a 3600, the x570 tomahawk with the same bios (1.40) and a 3080.

I did myself and will always suggest a clean fresh install of Windows also. Doing the upgrade should force the motherboard to return all bios settings to default as it did for me.

So could the issues be arising from the fact that I upgraded my bios while having the 3400g installed using usb firmware and starting from bios menu? Is this causing some incompatible settings to be transferred over?

would I be better installing 5800x and flashing bios manually from motherboard?

Hi mate thanks for the reply. Which Bios version are you using on the Tomahawk?

My GPU is Nvidia 3080 FE

I upgraded to latest stable one.

7C84v14

Here is a link to the display port for Nvidia drivers in case it's of any use. This fixed my issues

Another thing with this motherboard is that it seems to be running my 5600X very hot. I was hitting 85 even on a 280 aio. It was driving me crazy as my old 4790k barely touched 50 and that's running in silent mode on the same cooling setup. Found a few reddit threads were other users having the same issue. Few recommending the same thing. Cap the CPU juice to 1.2v. That seems to have fixed things for me for now. doesn't go above 60 deg and no change to stability or fps. I would still like this to be fixed by a bios update. I don't like messing with voltages.

@kidloco , If you cap the CPU voltage to 1.2v, can you be confident it's actually stable? Maybe games won't crash but I imagine other loads if you ever run them, like AVX could crash your computer. I think coming from Intel users will be surprised to see higher temps on a more efficient CPU, but that is the way it is. Having said that, 85 deg is probably high for 5600X. Would be interesting to see what temps others get with a 280 AIO.

the temps are fine, this generation just runs hotter due to the PBO, if it has thermal overhead it will boost longer/higher. That said, a cpu voltage offset of -0.05v will give you a fair temp drop I would imagine

As someone with the same CPU and motherboard on order as you I'm glad to hear this... I don't have a previous compatible CPU to boot (coming from an i5 7600k!) so one of the reasons I chose the B550 Strix is for the BIOS flashback feature :) Fingers crossed I don't get any problems...

I use hdmi for screen, could this be an issue with needing to connect via display port? My monitor only has mini display port and I don’t have a cable :/
