Hello there, a computer of mine is having a big problem which may be down to a dodgy download .

I shall first explain what happens. So I turn it on, windows XP loads, it takes much longer time than usual to get from the welcome screen to the user accounts. After logging in, only the desktop wallpaper is visible for a while, but eventually icons appear. There is no taskbar, ever.

A lot of files won't open and the the application to open them won't either, I go to open something and the computer simply does nothing. Basic things like moving files, it won't let me do. Upon opening the task manager I see that there is only about 10 running processes compared to the 20ish that there usually is, so I'm thinking the normal processes required to make windows work simply aren't starting or just aren't there anymore.

So what can I do? My anti-virus will load up but clicking on buttons does absolutely nothing. I can't move files I need to an external device, so I could use an enclosure to move them to another computer, but do I risk 'infecting' the other computer? I'd rather fix the computer than have to format it though, as I'd have to buy a new copy of windows (moving house grr).

I've had no trouble with this PC for 3 years and now it dies on me :(, please help!

Could try booting up in safe mode and trying apps from there....Not sure how much functionality you would get though...Being in safe mode and everything.

Oh yes I forgot to mention, safe mode does exactly the same thing, and system restore just says that it 'cannot be used at this time' or something. D:

try repairing you installation of windows,

insert the disk, set bios to boot from cd.

When asked what to do on the installation screen select install windows (dont select repair)

then it will look for previous versions of windows

it will then ask if you want to try adn repair the installation.

select yes

this way all the necessary files are replaced

its basicly reinstalling your windows but all your files and programs stay safe.

(as long as you dont format the drive and instlla windows)

Rember do this at your own risk.
