Hi all,

We are having issues at work and we can't get in touch with the lad responsible for IT.

We are having major issues with MS Office.

You can open excel spreadsheets is Excel 2007, however, as soon as you try to edit a cell it just stops responding or closes. Word won't open any documents at all, to even open Word properly you have to open one, then use FILE>NEW to get another but that doesn't last long.

Because I have admin access i've downloaded OpenOffice. It runs it's own spreadsheets fine, but if I try and open an excel spreadsheet on the server it stops responding. If I copy the spreadsheet to my HDD and try to open it then it starts too and then stops responding.

It's a problem we've had before but no idea how it was repaired.

Anyone any suggestions??

since I assume MSOffice is installed locally if many of you are having the same problem then I highly doubt it's Office at fault, if you are running the application remotely from a server then it sounds like it's the server having problems!

I know he installs everything remotely, never uses CDs :S

In either case, I can't understand why OpenOffice can't open an excel doc on my own PC.

It's really odd, we are all just sitting here unable to do 80% of our jobs :(

I take it that Excel doc is not stored on the hard drive of your PC though?

It sounds like an issue with your local area network. It is either that you have a permissions issue with the sign ons that you are using, or that something somewhere on the network is not switched on when it needs to be, e.g. a Network Attached Storage drive, or a network service that he as Admin switches on.

Rgds

Well Microsoft Office can be installed remotely (i.e the installer files can be on a network share) but it should be "running" from your local machine once installed. Are you able to run it OK when you're not connected to the network? Is there anything in the event viewer\application logs that might give you a clue as to why it's ballsing up? (start --> run --> eventvwr.msc)
